The Red Line is the newest of the MBTA rapid transit lines in the Boston, Massachusetts area.
The Red Line was the last of the four lines to begin construction, with the Cambridge Tunnel opening from Eliot Yard and Harvard to Park Street on the Tremont Street Subway on March 23, 1912.
The tunnels of the Red Line have a cameo in the 1936 H.

A station on the Atlantic Avenue Elevated served the station from 1901 to 1938; what is now the Red Line subway was extended from Park Street to South Station in 1913.
The Red Line subway platforms were extended to allow 6 car trains in 1985 and renovated again in 2005, as part of the Silver Line Phase 2 project.

He and another Red Line manager are defendants in a pending federal lawsuit by Flynn that alleges she was subjected to sexual harrassment and discrimination.

Two more mass transit stops and additional Red Line improvements will add the finishing touches to the 3.2 mile new subway to be completed by next fall, according to James F. O'Leary, MBTA general manager.
The MBTA awarded a grant to Cambridge merchants affected by the digging and blasting to compensate for the resulting decline in their sales, said Cambridge Chamber of Commerce President David Hughes.

The 1971 map was virtually identical to the 1967 map, except that the Red Line was modified to show the South Shore branch, and the Watertown line on the Green Line was eliminated (it had been "temporarily" closed in 1969).
A tail was left on the end of the Red Line for the planned extension of the South Shore branch to "South Braintree".
At the time, the MBTA seemed to feel that the extension would open much sooner, as all route "terminals" received "bold-faced" type, and "Quincy Center" station, the present end of the line for the South Shore branch, did not.

The easiest solution was to run the cavernous Bluebirds on the line at rush hours, with an official in the cab to insure that the non cab signalled cars were being properly operated and not exceeding their clearances.
The main yards for Amtrak and the south-side commuter rail are west of the Red Line yards, and just south of the facility the branch to the South Boston waterfront passes below the leads, while a viaduct carries the Old Colony commuter tracks from the west side to the east.
The switches connecting the Braintree line are located at the top of the ramp from the tunnel, and are followed immediately by a scissors crossover to the westernmost lead from the Cabot Yard.

 Red Line riders irate about paying more: MBTA likely to raise fares next January
The MBTA is likely to raise fares by about 25 percent next January as it grapples with more than $8 billion in debt and attempts to keep revenues in line with expenses.
Any new fare hike will likely be line with the last raise in January 2004, when the base subway fare rose from $1 to $1.25 and bus fare went from 75 cents to 90 cents.
The MBTA board will be asked next month to start the fare increase process, with the actual increases to be announced in the spring.

 Green Light For Green Line
When the streetcar lines were placed underground in 1897, there was no need to construct elevated platforms as that would have required the redesign of the interior of hundreds of streetcars (an enormous expense).
By the same token, many delays on the Green Line are caused by patrons who rush into the train before people have a chance to exit, or who insist on forcing their way into the train when there is another train with an identical destination directly behind the current one.
The MBTA is well aware of the low carrying capacity of the Green Line, and has recently finished testing new cars, some of which have entered into revenue service.

The Red Line is the longest line in the T. It has two branches and a High Speed Line.
The Red Line was originally supposed to be an elevated line from Harvard to Bowdoin Square in Boston where it would then enter the Tremont St. tunnel near Scollay Square.
Another early idea was to extend the Red Line from Ashmont to Mattapan and then make a loop by branching off after Broadway along the Fairmont CR line and connect at Mattapan.

The MBTA will work directly with suppliers to modify 10 cars to improve reliability as part of a pilot program to modify and retain these 47 cars.
The article suggested that if problems cannot be resolved with Breda, then the MBTA could be interested in negotiating a new contract with another builder, possibly Kinki-Sharyo, to buy enough additional new cars required to retire the Boeing fleet.
The MBTA has apparently reached a compromise agreement with Breda to accept a total of 85 Type 8s.

And, of course, the unfinished Cincinnati subway was built to the same specs as the MBTA Red Line.
The really weird part is that, while the four MBTA lines are totally incompatible with each other, each line has a "twin" somewhere else in the country.
