IUCN Red List - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (also known as the "IUCN Red List" and "Red Data List"), created in 1963, is the world's most comprehensive inventory of the global conservation status of plant and animal species.
The IUCN Red List is set upon precise criteria to evaluate the extinction risk of thousands of species and subspecies.
Species are classified in nine groups, set through criteria such as rate of decline, population size, area of geographic distribution, and degree of population and distribution fragmentation.

The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™
The Felidae Red List was put together by Cat Action Treasury Director Kristin Nowell, who manages the Red List assessment process for the IUCN/SSC Cat Specialist Group.
Species Survival Commission (SSC) has for four decades been assessing the conservation status of species, subspecies, varieties and even selected subpopulations on a global scale in order to highlight taxa threatened with extinction, and therefore promote their conservation.
The taxa assessed for the IUCN Red List are the bearers of genetic diversity and the building blocks of ecosystems, and information on their conservation status and distribution provides the foundation for making informed decisions about preserving biodiversity at local to global levels.

The 2003 list was published on Tuesday by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) and highlighted the plight of islands such as Hawaii, the Galapagos and the Seychelles, where the arrival of non-native creatures is threatening the survival of hundreds of species.
The biggest change to the 2003 Red List was the addition of 813 plant species that grow only Ecuador, the first results of a complete survey of the country that identified 4000 endemic plants.
Another 758 species of plants and animals are listed as extinct on the Red List.
