On one occassion, he took a group of young musicians from Chicago who were known to drink heavily and laugh at their leader's taste for commercial success.
This set the stage for an inevitable confrontation, as Red Nichols was a strict disciplinarian as a bandleader.

An innovative bandleader, Nichols (1905-1965) was also an early believer in the then-avant-garde concept that hot jazz could be annotated and played by ensembles of all sizes.
Variety announced that Nichols had turned over his entire band library of some 2,500 pieces of music to Paramount, who were beginning to put together the story and the score.
Kaye is ultimately both the major strength and the weakness of the picture, at least historically: Nichols did most of his bandleading in studios, doing records and radio, in fact he doesn't even talk in most of his surviving broadcasts and films.

Although still using the main name of The Five Pennies, Nichols' bands were often quite a bit larger and by 1929 he was alternating sessions featuring bigger commercial orchestras with small combos.
Nichols' earlier sessions are just now being reissued on CD in piecemeal fashion but none of his later albums are in print yet.
