The Red River Gorge is a scenic area that extends for approximately twenty-five miles along the middle and upper sections of the Red River, a tributary of the Kentucky River.
Prehistoric Native Americans lived on the numerous rock ledges in the gorge as early as 8000 B.C. Daniel Boone is believed to have explored the area, and he may have spent the winter of 1769-70 in the Red River Gorge.
The Red River Gorge was not well known until a controversy in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when environmentalists fought a proposal by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for a $34 million, 5,000-acre impoundment of the North Fork of the Red River.
