Red River Shootout - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Red River Shootout or, more recently, the Red River Rivalry, is a common name for the annual college football game between the University of Oklahoma Sooners and the University of Texas Longhorns.
The name is derived from the Red River that forms part of the boundary between the U.S. states of Oklahoma and Texas.
The Red River Rivalry has given rise to a great deal of negative stereotyping on the part of both fanbases: Texans often portray Sooners as poor, ignorant hillbillies envious of the state of Texas while Oklahomans portray Longhorns as arrogant, fake, self-glorifying pretend cowboys.

 Handbook of Texas Online:
The Red River Bridge controversy between Texas and Oklahoma (sometimes called the Red River War) occurred in July 1931 over the opening of a newly completed free bridge, built jointly by the two states, across the Red River between Denison, Texas, and Durant, Oklahoma.
On July 3, 1931, the Red River Bridge Company, a private firm operating an old toll bridge that paralleled the free span, filed a petition in the United States district court in Houston asking for an injunction preventing the Texas Highway Commission from opening the bridge.
The company claimed that the commission had agreed in July 1930 to purchase the toll bridge for $60,000 and to pay the company for its unexpired contract an additional $10,000 for each month of a specified fourteen-month period in which the free bridge might be opened, and that the commission had not fulfilled this obligation.

The district is seeking to divert about 7 percent of the water before it enters the Red River and takes on too much salt to be drinkable.
District officials say the water is needed to serve the region's growing population, which is expected to hit 4.3 million by 2060.
Water district officials like to say that the water they want, from the Cache Creek, Beaver Creek and Kiamichi River basins, is wasted after it hits the Red River because it takes on so much salt.

In football the object is for the quarterback, also known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his receivers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use shotgun.
With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

It is a clear division too between the red and burnt orange-clad fans with the noise factor only coming into play when play moves towards one of the end zones.
