The Red River of the North flows sluggishly north down the center of the Valley, which is not a valley but rather the level bed of an ancient glacial lake.
The Valley begins at the border of South Dakota and Minnesota at Big Stone Lake, following the course of the Red River forming the border of Minnesota and North Dakota, crossing into Canada to the mouth of the Red River in Lake Winnipeg.
The Valley is young, born of ice and water of the last continental glaciation.

Centered around the Red River of the North, these lands had previously been under the control of Great Britain.

Born in Switzerland, the home of alpine (mountain) glaciers, he was the first to recognize the characteristic traces of glaciation on a grand scale across the northern and southern hemispheres, and to propose the theory of continental glaciation.
