On 1973's Red Rose Speedway, Paul McCartney & Wings achieve the logical midpoint between the domesticity of RRS's predecessor Wild Life and its intense follow-up Band on the Run.
Red Rose Speedway gives credence to the argument both for and against Paul McCartney, and is probably not the best place to dig into his repertoire - it's kind of hard to fathom that Band on the Run would be released at the end of the very same year.
But for what it's worth Red Rose Speedway is a warm, imaginative, and, if you open your mind past (most of) the lyrics, thoroughly enjoyable listening experience.

Red Rose Speedway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Red Rose Speedway is Paul McCartney's fourth album release and second Wings album, officially credited to "Paul McCartney and Wings" upon its 1973 release, after the relatively weak commercial performance of the band's debut Wild Life had been credited only to the then-unknown Wings.
Both tours were bookended by Red Rose Speedway's long string of studio sessions, which started that March in Los Angeles and finished in London that October.
In 1993, Red Rose Speedway was remastered and reissued on CD as part of "The Paul McCartney Collection" series with "C Moon", "Hi Hi Hi", "The Mess" ("My Love"'s B-side) and "I Lie Around" (single "Live And Let Die"'s B-Side) as bonus tracks.

Red Rose Speedway, right down to the cover shot of Macca with a rose in his mouth, is about Paul McCartney, specifically his unique Seventies ability to pump up slight, pretty songs to the scale of "Hey Jude", seemingly unaware or unworried that that didn't necessarily make them as good as "Hey Jude".
A strong album in its original form, RED ROSE SPEEDWAY has since been augmented with three excellent bonus tracks, including "The Mess", a stomping guitar-driven rocker from Wings' 1972 European tour, and "Country Dreamer", a charming, country-tinged pop song that was previously only available as a long out-of-print single.
Enjoy "Red Rose Speedway" for what it is, a transitional period piece.

This was done because "Wild Life" had sold so badly, and it was felt that that was partly due to some people not being aware that it was a McCartney album.
In March 1972 the "Red Rose Speedway" sessions started in Los Angeles where Wings recorded, "Big Barn Bed", "My Love", "One More Kiss", "Single Pigeon", "When The Night", "Loup" and the closing medley.

He is not an especially intense lyricist, preferring instead to choose his words according to sound and feel alone, and his melodies—particularly on more uptempo material—appear to be fostered through basic reliance on a rotating riff.
This concentration on ramming the point home is both Red Rose Speedway's strength and weakness, however.
Wings' great recent single of "Hi Hi Hi" is nowhere to be found, for reasons undeclared, especially gritting in light of a weak filler instrumental called "Loup (1st Indian on the Moon)," electronic patter more gracefully left to such as Pink Floyd and Hawkwind.

All right, he's made a record with his wife and a record with his pickup band where democracy is allegedly the conceit even if it never sounds that way, so he returns to a solo effort, making the most disjointed album he ever cut.
There's a certain fascination to its fragmented nature, not just because it's decidedly on the softer side of things, but because his desire for homegrown eccentricity has been fused with his inclination for bombastic art rock à la Abbey Road.
Consequently, Red Rose Speedway winds up being a really strange record, one that veers toward the schmaltzy AOR MOR (especially on the hit single "My Love"), yet is thoroughly twisted in its own desire toward domestic art.

To me, it's almost Red Rose Speedway Part Two; it's not even as good as London Town - a comparible album in that it was recorded mainly by Paul, Linda and Denny as the band around this trinity fell apart.
It's not my favourite McCartney but it is good and he sounds more confident than on his previous LP "Red Rose Speedway".Don’t care much for “Jet” or “Helen Wheels” but “Let Me Roll It” and “Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five” are high points.

Indeed, back in the Soviet Union of the 1960s, liking the Beatles was tantamount to treason not political, but cultural and the powers in control officially banned the band from the airwaves to prevent the spread of "alien propaganda".
Many of the citizens, however, had a different view of the Beatles, and this is the story told in Paul McCartney in Red Square, a new DVD that mixes interviews and historical footage with clips of McCartney's first concert in Russia, which didn't occur until 2003.
Through interviews with citizens of the former USSR, we learn of their struggles to do such simple things as purchase a Beatles LP, which was an offense punishable by imprisonment.

And 'Silly Love Songs', the album's other hit single, while it did serve as a piece of red cloth for the critics (including even both Lennon and Yoko Ono who gave out some sneering remarks on the subject), is equally irresistable, with a bassline to kill for and wonderful three-part harmony arrangements.
Plus, after repeated listenings some of the stuff really begins disclosing itself in a better way; while few of these songs could even hope to surpass the studio versions, most of them add at least a little 'additional twist' which is quite a value in itself once you get used to it.
Frankly speaking, I don't know what the hell you could actually need it for, but there it is, and if you're generous enough, you might as well take it.
