	Red Rover
		Red Rover, the Navy's first hospital ship, was a side-wheel steamer built in 1859 at Cape Girardeau, Mo. Purchased by the Confederacy 7 November 1861, she served as CSS Red Rover (see II, 560), a barracks ship for the floating battery New Orleans.
		Red Rover, dispatched to assist in the emergency, took on board extreme burn and wound cases at Memphis and transported them to less crowded hospitals in Illinois.
		Red Rover continued her service along the river, taking on sick and wounded and delivering medicine and supplies, until the fall of 1864.

	Young explorers play Red Rover - Nasa style
		Teacher Tom Demmo's class at Caroline is using a Red Rover Lego Dacta model vehicle kit and special control software to design and operate a tele-robotic rover in a model terrain of Mars.
		The Red Rover kit was designed by the Planetary Society, an organization co-founded in 1980 by the late Carl Sagan.
		In addition, three sets of two drivers each have been training to control the rover from their computer, which involves navigating the robot through a three-dimensional world with the only information supplied by the two-dimensional computer screen, receiving video images from the rover's camera.

	USN Ships--USS Red Rover (1862-1865)
		She served as CSS Red Rover in 1861-62 and was captured on 7 April 1862 at Island Number Ten by USS Mound City.
		Commissioned as USS Red Rover in December 1862, she was used for the rest of the Civil War as hospital ship for the Mississippi Squadron.
		Red Rover was stationed at Mound City, Illinois, from December 1864 until November 1865, when she was decommissioned and sold.

		As the singer Elton John once said, "Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids." In addition to frigid temperatures, the atmosphere is stratospherically thin and composed almost entirely of carbon dioxide.
		This grassroots philosophy has been used for the last two Mars lander/rover opportunities, Mars Pathfinder and the Mars Exploration Rover Mission, or MER, and it’s likely to be the model for future robotic surface missions planned for 2007 and possibly 2009.
		As this issue was going to press, our team was scheduled to launch two rovers to Mars no earlier than June 8 and June 25, and they will touch down on January 4 and 25, 2004.

	Mars Exploration: Features
		One of the targets they chose for analysis was a rock that they nicknamed "Pebbles." Only this rock isn't on the red planet; it is located in the JPL Mars Yard, an outdoor test facility that approximates Mars terrain located away from the rover lab.
		And after the mission, the students were able to visit "Mars" and actually see the rover used to conduct the exercise and "Mars rocks".
		Student navigators selected by The Planetary Society as part of their Red Rover Goes to Mars program recently visited JPL to participate in a simulated mission operations exercise.

		The rover's brain comes in the form of computers, which are used to control all of the rover's motors, instruments, and communications between Earth and Mars.
