| | RED RUM (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20) |
 | | Red Rum was sold privately to Mrs Lurline Brotherton for 1,200gns, for whom he won three hurdle races and five chases when trained by Bobby Renton and then Anthony Gillam, but he was later resold, this time for 6,000 guineas, through the autumn sales at Doncaster Sales in August, 1972, to Noel Le Mare. |
 | | Red Rum's form was nothing like as good in the run-up to the 1976 National and he had failed to finish closer than third in any of his eight previous runs that season. |
 | | Red Rum began the 1976-77 season with a win in a poor race at Carlisle, but after a dismal run when last of three in a handicap chase at Newcastle on November 20 there were some vociferous calls for his retirement, as there had been at about the same time the previous year. |
