I am not generally in favor of this approach, preferring private local remedies which offer more oversight by those actively involved with their local charities and which can also attach “strings” that ensure that money will not be wasted – either by contractors or by recipients.
Public initiatives should be used only for things that are (1) Very clear to everyone, (2) Concise and single topic, (3) Accurately titled on the ballot and signature roll, (4) Impossible to get via ordinary legislative politics, and (5) Unlikely to need amendments, ever, to work properly in their intended way.
Mine is the Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross and I know they do excellent work.

I detest rightism for its insistence on cramming laws based on ancient superstitions down everybody's throats.
The (american) conservative positions on arms control, abortion and the death penalty are pretty much non-issues here anway, supported only by fringe groups (read: extremists).
