In the upper beds occur the bituminous or Boghead shale of tiutun.
The general sequence begins with the Artinsk beds, sandy and marly or conglomeratic beds in close connection with the Carboniferous, overlain by the Kungur limestonet and dolomites; these are followed by red fresh-water sandstones, over which comes an important series of copper-bearing sandstones and conglomerates.

In the Vosges district, this subdivision of the Bunter is called the Grs des Vosges, or the Gre-s principal, which comprises: (1.) red micaceous and argillaceous sandstone; (ii.) the conglomirat principal; and (iii.) Grs bigarre principal (=grs des Vosges, properly so-called).
In Germany some of the harder beds have yielded building stones, which were much used in the middle ages in the construction of cathedrals and castles in southern Germany and on the Rhine.

When you see red-coloured sedimentary rocks (red beds), it usually means that the sediments were laid down in very shallow water or on land.
At 20 m south of the sign, near the south end of the cliff, green sandstone beds have ripple marks of different wavelengths from bed to bed; these show that the beds were deposited under different conditions.
A little north of centre of the outcrop is a red shale bed with lines of green sandstone running across it forming a polygonal pattern.

The Abo red beds in the subsurface of Chaves County have become some of the most important targets of natural gas drilling since they were designated "tight gas sand" in 1980.
The Abo red beds were then tested to verify gas detected by crossover of the neutron-porosity and density-porosity logs.
The Abo red beds are subdivided vertically into three informal lithologic units on the northwest shelf of the Permian Basin: a lower unit of "granite wash," a middle unit of mudstone, an upper unit of interbedded sandstone and mudstone.

“Red beds” of Cala Viola, Sardinia are identified as paleosols and used to reconstruct late Permian paleoclimatic conditions.
The lack of free soil carbonate and the degree of chemical weathering are consistent with a humid, temperate climatic regime.
Instead, it is suggested that the red color of the paleosols is a result of former good drainage, and that a priori, red color does not indicate specific paleoclimatic conditions.

Bloomsburg paleosol "cycles" consist of a basal, sharp marine erosional surface that truncates the subjacent paleosol, followed by a red interval that includes symmetrical wave ripple-laminated sandstone and bioturbated siltstone, which is then succeeded upward by red claystone with abundant pedogenic slickensides.
The Bloomsburg Red Beds in southeastern NY is revised to include two intervening tongues, the lower Wurtsboro Tongue and the upper Basher Kill Tongue.

Red shales appeared early in the Permian in South Africa and in late Pennsylvanian in North America and in the mid Permian in Europe and Argentina (Veevers p192).
The reduction of litter may have caused the extremes of moisture in the Permian and Triassic red beds because not only does litter and mulch considerably affect keeping soil moist and at an even temperature, but the litter's own extra moisture stores can cause a considerably enhanced transfer of moisture inland.

The red beds are generally considered to be indicative of increasingly arid conditions in Permian times.
In Europe, the Lower Permian, or Rotliegendes [red layers], was marked principally by erosion from the Paleozoic Alps of the Carboniferous into the low-lying land to the north; the formations are chiefly shale and sandstone, with some conglomerate and breccia.
This glaciation and the aridity of which the red beds seem to be the result are the two most strongly marked characteristics of the Permian period.

Recently-discovered mammals from the Upper Triassic Red Beds of the Karoo include Erythrotherium and Megazostrodon, and these tiny specimens show that by the end of the Karoo period, 190 million years ago, a new class of animal had appeared and stood ready to initiate, much later, the great Age of Mammals.
The climate during the Red Bed period became increasingly hot and dry, and the succeeding Cave Sandstone was laid down in semi-desert conditions, where wind-blown sand covered large areas of the Karoo.
