Red-crested pochards are scarce visitors to Paxton, usually during the winter.
Larger than the common pochard, they occur locally in shallow pools in central and southern Europe, but the birds seen in Cambridgeshire are most likely to be from a feral breeding population, centred on the Cotswolds.
They are being seen more frequently, with 27 in the 1990s and at least 21 since 2000, compared to 4 in the 1970s and 9 in the 1980s.

The male Pochard looks as if he has a fl body but most of this is wrapped up in a copious pale grey bandage.
Female Pochard can be harder to identify, but there is usually at least a hint of grey brown on their mantle and flanks and their faces usually show pale blotches, especially in front of the eye.
Pochards are uncommon breeding birds, largely restricted to east England and Scotland.

The Red-crested Pochard breeds across much of the Palearctic, from the Iberian Peninsula in the west to Mongolia in the east, and population trends do not appear to be consistent across this vast range - with declines in some areas, and increases in others.

A new bird for the year was a female Red-crested Pochard in Stratford Bay this evening - it had been at Blagdon on 5th, as had the drake Goldeneye, which also reappeared at Chew today.

Red-crested Pochards turn up quite regularly in small numbers in various parts of Britain, often on quite small lakes and often at this time of the year so I think it's fairly likely.
His beak is red, as are his eyes, but his head is not as orange as the pics, (although it is orangish and fluffy looking!!) Also his body has more brown, no white areas.
That means he's moulting - all male ducks moult out their brightly coloured breeding plumage at the end of the breeding season (i.e., about now) and become dull-coloured like the females for the next 2-4 months, while they are growing new wing feathers and can't fly well (if at all).

They do not walk as well on land as the dabbling ducks because their legs tend to be placed further back on their bodies to help propel them when underwater.
The probably extinct Pink-headed Duck, previously listed as Rhodonessa caryophyllacea, has recently been shown by genetic analysis to be closely related to the Red-crested Pochard so has now been transferred to the same genus, as Netta caryophyllacea.

In this page we publish a number of photos regarding the presumed hybrid mallard x red-crested pochard (Anas platyrhynchos x Netta rufina),and a melanistic mallard Anas platyrhynchos from Llobregat delta, Barcelona, and couple of photos from two geese at Villafáfila, Zamora.
Note the basic mallard aspect but the rufous tones of nape, some white on sides of neck, bill colour and profile, overall tinge to head and shape of body sides all recalling Red-Crested pochard characters.
The Mallard x Red-crested Pochard hybirds looke like an abnormal Mallard (Randler, 2001: Alula,3: 82-91) and this bird fits well what it is described in the above bibliography.

 Netta rufina
The male is unmistakeable with his flamboyantly red head, white flanks and ridiculously pink bill.
The female is subtler, browner in tone with pale cheeks and a dark cap recalling a female Common Scoter but with a longer, slimmer bill and longer, paler body.
In flight, Red-crested Pochards of both sexes have a much more extensive white wingbar than any other European duck; all the secondaries and all the primaries look almost completely white in the field, making a stunning sight when seen in a large flock.
