Ant - Search View - MSN Encarta
The ant body consists of head, thorax, and abdomen, with the abdomen articulated to the thorax by means of an abdominal pedicel, or stalk.
Typically a “finder” ant, which forages for food, arouses the colony, and excited nestmates may be influenced in their direction of progress from the nest by one means or another, according to species.
Ants, particularly certain aphid-tending species, are frequent pests around lawns and gardens; however, the great benefit of these and other ants in aerating and mixing the soil must also be considered.

The main sources of food for harvester ants are seeds of different types of grasses and the bodies of insects and spiders (arthropods).
Harvester ants are very aggressive, but one reptile has the perfect defense: the armor of the horned lizard or "horny toad." Horned lizards feed almost exclusively on harvester ants.
The ants were part of an experiment to observe and study the effects of space flight and a weightless environment on the tunneling behavior of ants during a 16-day space shuttle flight.

Ant colonies are eusocial, and are very much like those found in other such Hymenopterans, though the various groups of these probably developed sociality independently through convergent evolution.
Ant communication is primarily through chemicals called pheromones, which, because most ants spend their time in direct contact with the ground, are more developed than in other Hymenopterans.
A crushed ant will emit an alarm pheromone that in high concentration sends other ants nearby into an attack frenzy, and in lower concentration attracts them, while a few ants use what are called propaganda pheromones to confuse their enemies.

Urban IPM: Insects: Ants: Harvester Ants
Harvester ants are so called due to their tendency to collect and harvest seeds.  There are 22 species found in the United States.  Workers are between ¼ and ½ inch (4.7-11.5 mm) in length.
Swarmers are seen in the summer.  Young queens mate with ants from nearby colonies in a mating flight.
Due to their large structure and surrounding defoliation, nests are easy to locate.  During the hottest part of the day, worker ants rest inside the nest.  Nests need to be treated with a pesticide bait suitable for harvester ants.

Because red imported fire ants often build their nests in turfgrass areas in California, frequently the mounds have been mowed and are nearly flat, appearing as soft, loose dirt that obscures the grass and looks like a bald spot in the turf.

Ants can be found in almost any type of turfgrass, and colonies can occur in lawns, parks, playgrounds, golf courses as well as agricultural land and wilderness areas.
Several harvester ant species, such as the red harvester ant, produce nests in open, sunny areas that are flattened 1 meter diameter circular areas cleared of vegetation, covered with course gravel and with a one or a few central nest openings.
Ants may also be a nuisance to gardeners during weeding and harvesting (see Managing Fire Ants in Vegetable Gardens, 2 pp, 5/98 and Managing Fire Ants in Texas Schoolyard and Butterfly Gardens, 2 pp, 10/98).

The research question is to determine how individual, dim-witted ants are able to build complex nests and maintain their colonies, using a new generation of ants each year, for the twenty-year life span of their colonies.
The results of their studies were surprising; by observing individual ants and ant colonies over years, the researchers found that although the nests are very similar, the individual ants are not specialized and the colonies do not have leaders.
She concluded that ants do not have inherited abilities or task orientations, but rather an ability to switch tasks and be flexible, based on their interactive patterns.

While ants from the youngest, smallest colonies will go out of their way to avoid potentially combative contact with neighbors, those from three- or four-year-old colonies tend to be persistent and aggressive, ready to contest for resources.
