The red screen of death (RSoD) is a variation of the familiar Blue Screen of Death which exists in the prerelease versions of Microsoft's upcoming operating system, Windows Vista (previously codenamed Longhorn).
The red screen of death is said to differ from its blue counterpart, by being shown as a result of a boot loader error.
The Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) is the screen displayed by Microsoft's Windows operating system when it cannot (or is in danger of being unable to) recover from a system error.

As if the dreaded "Blue Screen of Death" that plagues users of existing Windows variants weren't enough, some beta testers are reporting that they've encountered a new "Red Screen of Death" in early versions of Longhorn.
Posters characterized the RSOD as the newer, more evil cousin of the current Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), which is displayed when Windows experiences a major error that will likely require a reboot to fix.
But the RSOD is no different from the fl screen that currently displays when existing versions of Windows experience a similar system failure, Sullivan said.

Almost everyone who has a PC with Microsoft Windows on it knows of the haunting Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) which are known to occur at the worst times (ie: when almost finished writing a long paper that you never saved).
However, with the upcoming Windows release, codenamed Longhorn, a new Screen of Death will arive.
The Red Screen of Death (RSOD) will only be used for really bad errors.
