 Red-Breasted Merganser
The eggs of the Red-breasted Merganser measure two and a half inches in length, an inch and five-eighths in breadth, resemble in form those of the domestic fowl, and are of a uniform plain dull yellowish cream-colour.
The Red-breasted Merganser is best known throughout the United States by the name of "Shell-drake." It is, like all the species of its tribe, a most expert diver, and on being fired at with a flint-locked gun generally escapes by disappearing before the shot reaches the place where it has been.
The range of the Red-breasted Merganser is of vast extent.

Fish Eating Birds and Salmonids in Scotland, page:8
Red-breasted mergansers were predictably scarce in winter, arriving in April to occupy the (predominantly lower) river in May and producing ducklings in July and August.
On the North Esk, red-breasted mergansers were found mainly downstream of areas used by goosanders, but where they overlapped in distribution, merganser densities in May averaged about twice the density of goosanders present in April (Figures 2.6a and 2.6b).
The trends in spring populations of goosanders and red-breasted mergansers were similar, declining in parallel so that on both rivers the numbers of breeding sawbills halved over the study period.

 Birds: The Red Breasted Merganser
The eggs of the Red-Breasted Merganser vary from six to twelve, are oval in shape, and are of a yellowish or reddish-drab, sometimes a dull buffy-green.
There is a difference in opinion as to the nesting habits of the Red-breast, some authorities claiming that, like the Wood Duck, the nest is placed in the cavity of a tree, others that it is usually found on the ground among brushwood, surrounded with tall grasses and at a short distance from water.
The term Merganser is derived from the plan of the bird's bill, which is furnished with saw teeth fitting into each other.

 Birds - Red-breasted Merganser
The position of the nostril, near the centre of the American merganser's bill, and near the base of the red-breasted species, is the positive clew to identity.
Swift currents of water, deep pools where the fish hide, and foaming cataracts where they leap, invite the red-breasted merganser, as they do its larger American relative; for both birds have insatiable appetites, happily united with marvelous swimming and diving powers that must be constantly exercised in pursuit of their finny prey.
It is the female that bears all the burden of hatching the creamy buff eggs—six to twelve—and of feeding and training the young brood; her gorgeous, selfish mate discreetly withdrawing from her neighborhood when nursery duties commence.
