 PRESS 4
Redbone, whose father is Black and Blackfoot Indian and whose mother is Blackfoot, Shawnee and Choctaw, later chose the term “redbone”; for her name.
Redbone’s father, a funk and gospel musician in the ’70s, nurtured her with what she describes as “real” soul music – before it was stripped down.
Redbone received her “glass slipper” in the form of a microphone that was unceremoniously shoved in her face while she was doing some illustrations for George Clinton and the P-Funk All Stars.

But for the Madman Blues Band, playing a four-hour set Friday afternoon at Midway Airport won't be nearly as wild as playing on Maxwell Street, the famous blues hub in Chicago, or signing autographs for a fan's iguanas.
Last year, Madden said, the band felt like major rock stars when there was a long line for autographs, including one fan who asked them to sign his two pet iguanas.
The band, which released a CD titled "Reckless Conduct" last year, plays a few originals, such as "Madman Mambo," "Unemployed Blues" and "The Blueskeepers," mixed in with covers of songs by Albert King, Jimmy Reed, B.B. King and Muddy Waters, to name a few.

It was a mix of fl and tribal influences, and many called their style "swamp music." They named themselves Redbone, and they were one of the very few rock groups to be fully staffed by genuine American Indians.
They wore buckskins and moccasins onstage, and promoted themselves as "the Injun band." It was a gimmick, but it seemed to work, and slowly their reputation grew on the west coast nightclub circuit.
Their first single was "Maggie," "a song," said Lolly, "about the way some girls prostitute themselves in life." It became a regional hit in some parts of the country in September 1971.

The Rabin-Davis band originally formed in the 1920s, and was a well-seasoned outfit by the time of these wartime recordings.
Nothing particularly "Romany" about the band though: the name, which was pretty much an affestation, was later dropped and the group became known simply as the Oscar Rabin Orchestra.
With a boozy, bluesy, cheerfully dissolute vocal style, Redbone approached various oldies and standards with a refreshingly relaxed attitude, not the glitz of the Manhattan Transfer/Bette Midler scene, or the mystifying inscrutiablity of Tom Waits, nor the eager-to-please loopiness of Dan Hicks...

Raised in Brooklyn and in rural Kentucky, she was reared on pop and soul/funk music of the 70s, but also on the very different sounds of her mother’s Choctaw family, resulting in a unique sensibility as she began her career as a songwriter.

Not that Mel Lyman was that talented of a harp blower--he simply woke up one day and declared his omnipotence, drawing Kweskin in as a disciple, but effectively dismantling one of the 1960s' most eclectic and memorable band s.
