However, it was in 1964, at the age of 22, when he first caught the critic's attention as Sgt. John Mann in the television series "Redcap", in which he starred with Diana Rigg.
John continued to show his versatility in 1968 when he appeared in a TV serial called "The Inheritance", in which he played an entire series of characters, both fathers and sons, from the mid-1800s up through the days of Churchill.
Little did he know that this movie, and the series that followed, would catapult him from obscure supporting actor to national attention, and would make John Thaw a household name for the first but certainly not the last time in his budding career.

There is no doubt that without the top class writing on the series, the whole would have fallen flat, and it is testament to their ability that it didn't become just a formulaic series - each episode is demanding and well-constructed and many different topics are covered over the series.
Series 1: It looks as though the series has been released without any major 'treatment', with only one show actually being restored (and that was originally for the release on the Sweeney set), but it certainly doesn't suffer for this as all the episodes are fresh transfers from film..
Redcap is from a time when the British army was still very much active throughout the world, and the occasional hostility towards Mann is pitched as such.

Thaw came from a working class background, having been born in West Gorton, Manchester.
His only screen project not considered a popular success was the BBC series 'A Year in Provence'.

I remember eagerly watching the weekly series during my initial trg in Chi in '64 - on a spluttering and spitting B&W TV set in the one and only TV Room (for trainees).
That concerned the rape of an Adjutant's wife and involved Thaw interviewing the wife in her hospital bed and shaking her demanding she tell him who her assailant was.
I can see from the various replies that this was not the best of TV series.
