 | | Anesthesiologists had anecdotally noticed for decades redheads seem to require more anesthesia during surgery but this is the first study to show it actually is true, Daniel Sessler, a professor of anesthesiology at the University of Louisville, who was involved in the study, told United Press International. |
 | | In the study, which was presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, Sessler's team found that redheaded Caucasian women required 20 percent more anesthesia to block limb movement in response to a painful stimulation than women with dark hair. |
 | | Edwin Liem, also of the University of Louisville, said in a written statement he believes the receptor mutation in redheads triggers release of a hormone that plays a role in increasing pain sensitivity. |
