The Maotianshan shale is an early Cambrian rock formation exposed in the Yunnan Province of China in the villages of Ercaicun and Chengjiang near the city of Kunming.
For example, the Ellipsocephaloidea, once considered part of the Redlichiida, is now considered a primitive "bridge" between the Redlichiida and Ptychopariida.
The family Bathynotidae was included in the order Redlichiida in the 1959 Treatise, but is listed as "order uncertain" in the 1997 Treatise.

Redlichia takooensis , a member of the trilobite order Redlichiida.
Redlichiida is an order within the major extinct arthropod class Trilobita.

Redlichiida is an order ((biology) taxonomic group containing one or more families) within the major extinct arthropod (Invertebrate having jointed limbs and a segmented body with an exoskeleton made of chitin) class Trilobita (additional info and facts about Trilobita).
The Redlichids are one of the four older classes of trilobites that originated in the Lower Cambrian (From 544 million to about 500 million years ago; marine invertebrates).
The relatively uncommon Bathynotids had facial sutures, long genal spines, and long spines on the final thoracic segment.

mass extinction event at the close of the Cambrian introduced a major crisis in trilobite history; all Redlichiida, including the Olenelloidea, and most Late Cambrian stocks went extinct.
A large positive excursion in carbon isotope values (SPICE event) and an imprecisely dated drop in Laurentian sea level (Sauk II – Sauk III event) are recorded from this time and may explain the extinctions.
Most of the clades that became extinct were already in long-term decline, whereas most of the clades that survived suffered no sustained diversity reduction after the extinction.

 Trilobite Origins
The big problem with the earliest known trilobites, is that they are trilobites.
They provide few clues to which other arthropod groups may be their close relatives, or to their origins.
The earliest occurring trilobites in the fossil record are the Olenellids, members of the order Redlichiida, suborder Olenellina, and particularly the Fallotaspididae.

 REDLICHIIDA FACT SHEET
As the sister taxa for other orders are defined within the Redlichiina, an evolutionarily meaningful classification may emerge.
This may be relevant to the evolution of the natant orders (Ptychopariida, etc.), but is also consistent with Jell's (2003) suggestion that the natant state is primitive.
For a review of ontogeny in Redlichiida, see Dr. Rudy Lerosey-Aubril's page on larvae and trilobite orders: Redlichiida.

It is not a complete systematic review of the whole class, however: This is the first volume of a work which is expected to stretch to three.
Systematic descriptions are given for the Agnostida and Redlichiida only.
Readers familiar with the 1959 version will first notice that the familiar line drawings have been almost totally replaced by excellent (at least 600 dpi) photographs of actual fossils.

Another view is that the agnostids represent the first line to have diverged from the trilobites.
However, four orders of trilobites (Redlichiida, Corynexochida, Naraoidia, Ptychopariida) considerably predate the earliest Agnostids in the fossil record.
Agnostina are generally referred to simply as "agnostids" even though they probably should be called "agnostines".

 Fallotaspis Trilobite
Description: This plate displays a rarely seen example of a trilobite found in the Cambrian deposits of Tassmamte near Zagora, Morocco.
This trilobite is a member of the Order Redlichiida, Family Fallotaspidae, and is a most unusual positive/negative example of this rarely-offered taxon.
Indeed this is the FIRST and ONLY positive/negative example I have been able to secure for my collectors.

 High Level Trilobite Systematics
This page reviews the Trilobita at the ordinal level.
Such a morphology is often referred to as generalized, but it is quite far removed from the primitive Redlichiida design, and it might be better to refer to it as exceptionally durable by virtue of a successful specialization" (Fortey in Whittington et al.
Partly because this obviously successful design was so persistent, the ptychopariid morphology usually varying only slightly within these basic parameters, it has been difficult to construct useful families and even genera within this group.
