Redowa - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A redowa (RED-oh-wah) is a turning, leaping waltz step that was most popular in Victorian era European ballrooms.
The long reaching step can be danced on either the 1 or the 2 of each bar of music, depending on what feels best with the tune that is playing.
To begin a redowa, the leader will take a small leap step around in front of his/her partner with the left foot, then take a long scooping step straight back with the right (bending the knee of the left leg, keeping the torso upright).

The position for the Redowa is the same as for the Waltz, and like as in the Polka the couples may turn either to the right or to the left, or go forward or backward.

The redowa itself had been transformed into the vals bajito, in contrast to the waltz, which was known as a vals alto.
Indeed, most of the repertory for the dance, or fandango, was of European origin and included the polka, mazurka, and schottishe, in addition to the waltz and redowa.
After Longoria's move, most of the older genres -- redowa, schottishe, etc. -- were abandoned as the polka and the vocal, in the form of the canción ranchera (either in vals or polka time), became the staples of the modern conjunto.

If we notice farther that both the two-step and the hop waltz are but imperfect imitations of their models, easy to learn and quite easy to teach, we should not be surprised to find so many teachers and dancers contenting themselves with lower grades of movement.
It is now becoming very general to use the redowa step to the galop music-in that case the time may be a little slower than when the galop step is used.

The Polka helped to pave the way for the introduction of other Eastern European dances into the ballroom.
Those dances included the Mazurka, the Redowa and the Polka Redowa, all of which were done in 3/4 time, and included a series of intricate hops, glides, and leaps.
Quadrilles likewise maintained their popularity, although all figures came to be done primarily with plain, far simpler walking steps.

It was a subdued Redowa by those who failed in those days, finding the Redowa beyond their powers of proficiency.
The Redowa was modified with the waltz and became the Hop-waltz with the first and fourth steps being leaped instead of glided, except that the first step must be jumped, like a jetté, or a Fouette and the other two steps being run.
The other behaviors are the same as in the basic waltz.
