Richard Feltoe, Curator of the Redpath Sugar Museum, has been specially commissioned by the company to publish a biography of John Redpath; concentrating on his life and career outside of the sugar industry to complement an existing two-volume corporate history.
John Redpath was a major contractor on the Lachine Canal in Montreal, Quebec and the Rideau Canal in Ontario.

While sugar beets were successfully grown in Ontario and Quebec for many years, the prairie provinces proved to be most ideally situated, inland from cane refineries, providing the economic stimulus for a viable beet sugar industry in Alberta and Manitoba.
Redpath Sugars began as The Canada Sugar Refining Co. Ltd., in Montreal, in 1854.
Granulated sugar is produced in various crystal sizes and is usually packaged in 2, 4 and 10 kg packages for home use; in individual service envelopes for food service; and in 20 and 40 kg bags, 1 tonne tote bags or bulk for food manufacturers.

Kentridge Johnston Ltd. - Redpath Sugars   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Kentridge Johnston Limited was retained by Redpath Sugars to assist in their negotiations with the adjacent landowner who had submitted applications proposing the development of a 143,000 square metres mixed use development, including up to 142,000 square metres of residential uses.
The introduction of residential uses in this area needed to be very carefully considered given the potential noise impact of Redpath and the possibility of future residents preventing the normal operation of Redpath Sugars.
The preferred solution, which was adopted by the City and the adjacent landowner, was based on extensive computer modeling undertaken to establish acceptable view corridors and noise levels for future residential uses.

If Redpath is able to reduce its costs of production in the order of magnitude estimated, it may be able to accept net margins comparable to pre-investigation levels on some of its accounts and still earn an acceptable level of profit.
The CSI submits that Redpath’s capacity expansion plan was not relevant to the Tribunal’s inquiry, as it was contingent upon Redpath obtaining an injury finding and because the Tribunal’s period of inquiry focused on what occurred in the 4 1/2 years that preceded the Deputy Minister’s investigation.
United Sugars Corporation is a US sugar producer which, prior to the Deputy Minister’s preliminary determination, was a major exporter of refined sugar to Canada.

He suggested that other factors, such as the financing costs that Redpath and Lantic pay to their parent firms, the closure of the U.S. market, the influence of HFCS and the domestic industry's forays into liquid sugar, were injurious to the refiners.
Turning first to the issue of whether cane sugar and beet sugar should be considered separate classes of like goods, the Tribunal is of the view that the preponderance of evidence indicates that, in the vast majority of uses, cane sugar and beet sugar are substitutable.
Having found that imports of dumped and subsidized refined sugar have not caused material injury to the domestic industry, the Tribunal turned its attention to whether imports of dumped and subsidized refined sugar are threatening to cause material injury to the domestic industry.

Sugar beet processors have argued that the loan rate available through the nonrecourse loan program is not preferential, but rather reflects the market rate which their respective companies warrant based on their creditworthiness.
Further, the Department found no evidence that exported refined beet sugar was the subject of drawback claims made in connection with raw cane sugar imported by refiners at the lower-tier duty rate during the period of investigation.
Consequently, the Department estimated the amount of loans that the sugar beet growers may have received from these loan programs, in calendar year 1994, to be equal to the total amount of loans made to the agricultural sector by the BND during this period.

On February 10, 1995, the CSI submitted a formal written complaint concerning the dumping of refined sugar from the United States of America, Denmark, the Federal Republic of Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the Republic of Korea and subsidizing of refined sugar from the United States of America and the European Union.
That is, the #11 and #14 raw sugar may be commingled, but the refiner must maintain records and ensure that a quantity of refined sugar is exported or transferred to a manufacturer of sugar-containing products within a specified time period to correspond with the quantity of #11 raw sugar imported.
There is no doubt that the sugar in question is refined from a blend of both #11 and #14 sugars and it is impossible to identify the source of the input material used in producing the refined cane sugar.
