  Redpoll winter
Of all the winter finches, the five-inch common redpolls are better adapted to withstand colder temperatures and tend to stay farther north or arrive later.
Redpolls tend to be active earlier in the morning and later in the twilight to lengthen the time spent feeding.
Common redpolls have a close relative, the hoary redpoll, Carduelis hornemanni, which looks similar but is lighter overall with finer streaking, a white rump and just a wash of pink on the male's breast.

 British Garden Birds - Redpoll
Redpoll is one of the species that ornithologists do not seem able to decide on whether there are several species, subspecies or races.
Today, the Lesser Redpoll population is about one-tenth of what it was in the 1970s and yet this delightful little bird has only recently been moved to the Amber List of species of conservation concern.
Redpolls are not usually seen in the garden, but they are to be found in the local woods.

Redpolls have definitely made an impact on the Fairbanks area this winter.
The sheer number of birds, two -40 cold snaps, and the redpoll’s habitat of eating and defecating in the same spot set the stage for a classic example of disease transmission.

Arctic Redpolls in New Hampshire in December 2003
Common Redpolls first appeared in the area of Keene, New Hampshire on 7th December (7) and quickly built up to 55 birds by 10th December.
The Redpolls in the Keene area in December 2003 appeared to be entirely composed of C.f.flammea and C.h.exilipes, as might have been expected in south-west New Hampshire.
The variability within Common Redpoll plumages (all forms, including flammea) is well known, while a better understanding of the plumages of the southern form of Arctic or Hoary Redpoll C.h.exilipes has led to a significant increase in records from a number of European countries, especially the UK with over 800 records to date.

That the Mealy Redpoll becomes a richly coloured bird at the approach of the breeding season I feel quite confident, and I will now venture to give you some idea of its appearance at that happy period of its life.
The spots seen on the sides of the breast, and along the lower parts of the body, almost to the femorals, disappear, and the upper parts, or the shoulders and back, become almost of a uniform rich brown, as those parts are in the Common Linnet of Europe.
On two occasions I have seen the Mealy Redpoll associated with the American Siskin, in the beginning of October, in the province of New Brunswick.

Redpolls are not the easiest group of birds to deal with and are far from being my strongpoint.
The large (>15mm) white and unstreaked rump is a major point in favour of Arctic Redpoll - it seems large enough and white enough to exclude Mealy.
The fact that this bird was noticeably smaller than the accompanying Mealy Redpoll is to me the main point against Arctic, the streaking towards the flanks seems a bit on the broad side and the buffish patches on the sides of the upper breast all make me a little doubtful as to this birds identity.

Birds of Nova Scotia - Hoary Redpoll   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-06)
Hoary Redpolls have been reported in Nova Scotia only since 1959, when a "frosty-looking" bird was seen in a large flock of Common Redpolls at Lower Canard, Kings County, on 27 December (R.W. Tufts).
The next four were seen on 18 January 1969 near Halifax by Jean Boulva and Robert Gauthier; and on 22 February 1969 Charles R.K. Allen saw one at Kennetcook, Hants County.
Remarks Common Redpolls are sometimes misidentified as Hoary Redpolls by the overenthusiastic, but the frosty appearance and plain white rump, unstreaked in the centre, are distinctive, although the rump is readily seen only when the birds fly off at close range.

When alighted they were quite unsuspecting, and so heedless as to allow a close approach, scarcely regarding my presence, but clinging to the branches, dexterously picking out the seeds of the alder-cones, and occasionally coming to the ground after some which had dropped.
Few birds exhibit a more affectionate disposition than the Little Redpoll, and it was pleasing to see several on a twig feeding each other by passing a seed from bill to bill, one individual sometimes receiving food from his two neighbours at the same time.
Occasionally, however, they shewed considerable pugnacity, and one would drive off its companion, inflicting some smart blows upon it with its bill, and uttering a low querulous chatter.
