 Sequoia sempervirens description
Mature seed cones on sun foliage, from Humboldt Redwoods State Park [C.J. Earle].
Redwood is one of the few vegetatively reproducing conifers, readily regenerating from stump sprouts in the wake of a major disturbance (typically fire).
One peculiar consequence of this is the occurrence of 'white redwoods' (see photo), which are trees that originate as root sprouts and are competely nonphotosynthetic, deriving all of their carbohydrate from the roots of their photosynthetic associates (which are not necessarily related, as root grafting is common between redwoods).

California Guide - Redwood National Park
This is an easy one mile loop past the national park dedication site deep in the forest, placed at a ceremony in 1968 attended by the then president's wife.
First point of interest along the drive is Redwood Creek itself, and a side track leads to a trailhead from which a path follows the creek for 8 miles and links with other trails that wind through the dense forested slopes at either side.
This path passes countless mature redwoods mixed with equally impressive Douglas firs with lots of undergrowth, bushes, downed trees, and Spanish moss hanging from many of the branches, all enveloped by a general air of peace and stillness.

 Redwood National Park
Three redwood state parks— Jedediah Smith, Del Norte Coast, and Prairie Creek—were encompassed by the national park when it was created in 1968.
The park, near the northern limit of the coast redwood's narrow range, preserves the remnants of a forest that once covered two million acres and, at the turn of the century, was badly threatened by logging.
The raw, clear-cut land, a park official wrote, had "the look of an active war zone." Today, in an epic earthmoving project—a redwood renaissance—crews are beginning to reclaim vast stretches of logged-over lands.

The coast redwood environment recycles naturally: because the 100-plus inches of annual rainfall leaves the soil with few nutrients, the trees rely on each other, living and dead for their vital nutrients.
And of course, the redwoods themselves eventually fall to the floor where they can be returned to the soil.
