Reed's law - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Reed's law is the assertion of David P. Reed that the utility of large networks, particularly social networks, can scale exponentially with the size of the network.
The reason for this is that the number of possible sub-groups of network participants is

Texas Judiciary Online - HTML Opinion
The Reeds assert that the Hospital's policy and procedure on the scope of services to be provided by its emergency department, its performance improvement plan, and its representations to the community are some evidence that the standard of care was to have at least a written protocol in place for treating stroke patients.
The Reeds contend that the Hospital was negligent because its lack of a t-PA protocol for stroke constituted a "de facto" policy that prevented the administration of t-PA to stroke patients.
Reed was one that only a physician could have made, the trial court did not abuse its discretion in striking Lavender's testimony, and summary judgment for the Hospital on the Reeds' prevention by de facto policy theory was proper.

On December 11, 1990 this Court filed its order in the Crosby/Eitzen bankruptcy granting the Reeds relief from stay to foreclose on the restaurant collateral securing their judgment, deeming the sublease for the premises rejected, and requiring the collateral and premises to be surrendered to the Reeds.
The operation of the restaurant business by the Reeds and the use of the goodwill, equipment and fixtures from December of 1990 until August of 1991 was reasonable and for the purpose of preserving the value of the collateral.
The use of the inventory was equivalent to the purchase by the Reeds of goods customarily sold in the recognized restaurant/bar market, and as such, was a partial disposition of the collateral which did not require notice to the debtors.

FindLaw's Modern Practice - A Lawyer's Guide to Reed's Law and the Power of Networks by David Maizenberg   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Reed's law simply states that the value of a social network (an open peer-to-peer information exchange) scales exponentially with the size of the network.
One of the most dramatic examples of Reed's Law in action is Command Post (www.command-post.org) which has become a central clearing house of news on the war in Iraq.
Reed's Law suggests that the answer is yes.

The Scribes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The Scribes (Hakamin, learned) were not a sect but a profession; they were scholars learned in the law, who lectured on it in synagogues, taught it in schools, debated it in public and private, and applied it in judgment on specific cases.
Because of their minute acquaintance with the law, they were also called lawyers, and were recognized authorities.
A would-be scribe had already mastered the law and achieved a thorough familiarity with the scriptures by the age of 14.

 Future Positive : Welcome
The law says that the value of a network grows in proportion to the square of the number of users, which means that, once a network achieves a certain size, it becomes almost irresistibly attractive.
Both laws give a powerful bonus to interconnection; mergers and partnerships of networked companies should be able to extract a premium resulting from these laws.
And where the GFN law dominates, the central role is filled by jointly constructed value (such as specialized newsgroups, joint responses to RFPs, gossip, etc.).

Context Spring 1999 Issue -- Digital Strategy Supplement: Reed's Law
Metcalfe's law, simply derived, says that if you build a network so that any customer can choose to transact with any other customer, the number of potential connections each of the N customers can make is (N-1), giving a total number of potential connections as N(N-1) or N²-N.
So the law of supply and demand will kick in, lowering prices until the available resources (dollars and attention) are saturated.
Reed, a consultant and entrepreneur believes the best way to predict the future is to build it.

Metcalfe's law then is still useful when looking at the value of interconnected networks and it is clear that an interconnected network is more valuable than a broadcast network.
Reed's hypothesis is, in simple terms, that a network of networks (groups) is more valuable than the square of its nodes.
Reed proposes that the value of a network of networks (groups) becomes an exponential equation and the number of nodes become the exponent.

Howard Rheingold mentioned Reed’s law in chapter two of Smart Mobs as “the most recent in a series of fundamental discoveries about the driving forces of computers and networks”.
Reeds Law shows that the value of the network grows proportionately not to the square of the users, but exponentially.”
Thus the goal of future electronic communication tools is mainly to exploit this value at best and to do it, it is necessary to concentrate all the communication flows into one single “personal point of access” in order to have a single virtual address uniquely identifying our node in the GFN.

Reed's Law — An Interview: One of the Internet originals explains that the value of the Net comes not from its raw connections but from its group-forming ability.
We asked him about what others call "Reed's Law" which is based on the fundamental insight that the Net's value comes from its enabling of groups, not just of individual-to-individual connections.
What's exciting to me about this scaling law for group-forming networks, which friends and colleagues have been kind enough to call Reed's Law, is the way it links my long-standing intuitions about the importance and value of group behavior in networks to relatively hard-nosed economic models.
