It is traditional to discuss the length of theatrical motion pictures in terms of "reels." The standard length of a 35mm motion picture reel is 1000 feet.
The "reel" was established as a standard measurement because of considerations in printing motion picture film at a film laboratory, for shipping (especially the film case sizes) and for the size of the physical film magazine attached to the motion picture projector.
A Split Reel is a motion picture film reel in two halves that, when assembled, hold a specific length of motion picture film that has been wound on a plastic core.

But for a demo reel I'm not suprised they don't respond there's no value in it for them, just as ther'd be no value in their pursuing the issue of your use of it.
Most schools have a sound and music library, but most students put something commercial that they like on their reel, and for sound and music for festival work get the rights or use the edu sound library.
Music that is within the public domain, mostly songs that are 75 years or more in age, are completely free if you get someone to remaster them (unless the composer wants some fee).

TAPES: Usually on a 7 inch reel, one-quarter inch magnetic tape, and defined by the length of the tape, the thickness of the tape, the base material used for the tape and the type of magnetic coating applied to the tape.
Pre-recorded music in this format (for home use) could be purchased as early as 1958 and I have many such tapes (a few shown on the right hand side of the picture above).
Music available in this format was not widely accepted and is very rare.

In 1997, Reel released his debut recording, Wheel of the Year on Gaia's Light Records and began performing over 100 live dates a year (a furious pace which he continues to this day).

While guitar is Reel's main instrument, he can also play drums, percussion, keyboards, bass, and several stringed instruments including dulcimer, banjo and mandolin.

Just out of curiosity, I was wondering what the legal standing was for using people's music in demo reels.
Unless you're giving an editing reel, all they care about is the quality of work, not how it cuts to the music.
It seems 90 percent of reels do this and it is really repetitive.

Our music has always been influenced by both classical and soundtrack sources, and many reviewers have commented that the music is like "a soundtrack in search of a film." Such was our determination that we even released a 'soundtrack' album for which there was no film.
This 'set' monitoring level also related to the lower level that the music would adopt within the film, and reminded us that mixing for film is a separate art to mixing for an album (even though the soundtrack was also for CD release).

This omnibus musical from 1932 (which spawned a similarly titled series) showcased a range of talent so vast it's amazing one record can contain it.
