Topic: Reenactors

In the News (Tue 14 Feb 12)

Powell's Books - War Games: Inside the World of Twentieth-Century War Reenactors by Jenny Thompson
Mostly men, these reenactors celebrate, remember, and re-create the tiniest details of the Battle of the Bulge in the Maryland woods, D day on a beach in Virginia, and WWI trench warfare in Pennsylvania.
Historian Thompson surveyed hundreds of reenactors, observed their public living history displays and did her part by attending private reenactments, posing variously as a Red Cross driver, a war correspondent and a Soviet infantrywoman.
By day participants march, attack, fire blanks and commit atrocities (reenactors seem to delight in being captured and summarily executed and having their corpses looted), the dead returning to life after a few minutes to rejoin the fray.

Reenactors Prepare to Mark Battle of Bull Run
Known to Confederate reenactors such as Wolfsberger as First Manassas, the battle on July 21, 1861, was the Civil War's first large-scale confrontation.
Because the National Park Service prohibits the reenactors from using the actual battlefield in Manassas, the event will be held 60 miles away on the privately owned Cedar Creek Battlefield.
Many of the most hard-core campaigner reenactors shun mainstream events such as this weekend's, which they say are driven more by entertainment value than historical accuracy.

Kindred Spirits by John J. Lamb published by Fate Magazine 1998-12-01
As a ghost researcher and Civil War reenactor, I found this a remarkable opportunity both to participate in the grand event and to collect dozens of fresh accounts of spectral sightings from one of America's most haunted towns.
As I had discovered, many reenactors were initially reluctant to speak of their unearthly experiences, so it did no good to try to hurry a story.
Reenactors wear woolen uniforms, carry authentic rifles, and live in crude canvas "dog-tents." They eat salt pork and hardtack, sing sentimental tunes from the era, and stage dramatic mock fights, sometimes involving thousands of combatants.

Historic Lecompton - birthplace of the civil war
The Lecompton Reenactors is a volunteer group into a love affair with making Kansas territorial history come alive for entertainment and education.
The reenactors enjoy the respite from their usual vocations of preacher, lawyer, retail sales clerk, newspaper columnist, bank president, administrative judge, fire captain, engineer, dentist, farmer, college history instructor, college history professor, governmental administrator, disability caretaker, and museum administrator.
The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 opening the territory to settlement resulted in a race between the free staters and abolitionists of the North and the slave holders of the South to see who could bring in the most voters to determine whether Kansas would be a free or slave state.

Visit American Civil War Battle sites
In early April, 800 reenactors from around the country converged on Mansfield, Louisiana to commemorate the 140th anniversary of the battle.
For many of them, the trip to Mansfield was the culmination of a yearlong effort to preserve this historic battleground, identified by CWPT as one of the ten most endangered battlefields in the nation because of a nearby lignite mining operation.
In a very public display of the importance of preservation, reenactors from the 15th Texas and 19th Louisiana participated in a 15.2-mile march from Manfield to Pleasant Hill.

Reenactors are sometimes looked on with suspicion, particularly by military veterans, but also by elements of the general public.
It is often difficult for veterans or the public to understand why reenactors do what they do, or there may be questions as to the motivation, or the knowledge of the reenactors.
A final concern mentioned by Thompson's book is the "fantasy farb", or tendency of reenactors to gravitate towards "elite" units such as commandos, paratroopers, or Waffen-SS units resulting in an under-representation in the re-enactment community of what were the most common types of military troops in the period being re-enacted.

While reenactors span a remarkably wide demographic, from high school drop-outs to PhD.s, from right-wing Republicans to left-wing Democrats, from conscientious objectors to combat veterans, we are often painted by academics and the national media with the broad brush of all being gun-crazed proto-fascists in desperate need of love and shock therapy.

However, I was thinking that all of the photographs would be of contemporary versions of original articles of clothing, weapons, and equipment, but what Davis provides instead are those original artifacts, from the uniforms of all of the major units down to the smallest details such as buttons.
The histories of these battles are clearly the least important part of the book for civil war reenactors since they can only sketch out the battles in the most basic terms with regards to strategy and tactics, units, and uniforms, but more detailed accounts on every Civil War battle are certainly out there.
One of the key things to remember when looking through this book is to read the text that goes along with all the contemporary and historical photographs and other illustrations for the information that is there.

The webmaster is a member of the Army Air Forces Reenactors List, a group of reenactors that portray AAF crew or enlisted members at airshows and other events.
This is partly due to the fact that many AAF reenactors are not into this for mock battles and such, but enjoy telling the history behind the aircraft, honoring the heroism of our forefathers, and being around the aircraft and giving a clearer historical setting for what is being displayed.
However, most of the reenactors the webmaster has been associated with do it mostly out of a great interest in history and historical figures and a desire to pass that history (and attitude towards history) on to the next generation.
