Reeves didn't even mention that he played guitar because he didn't want it to seem that he wanted something from Bowie.

Unfortunately, Gabrels doesn’t always have the melodic ideas to keep his sonic and conceptual flights aloft.

Reeves Gabrels had been laying fairly low in the 21st century when he turned in his third solo album, Rockonica, for Steve Vai's Favored Nations label.
Gabrels is clearly best known as a hired gun, and on previous efforts has called in favors from his more famous singing employers, whether it was to add "star power" to an album or because Gabrels was unsure of his own vocal abilities.
This time out, all the lead and many of the backing vocals are handled by Gabrels (who seems to have gotten more confident as a vocalist), and the album actually comes off stronger as a result.

Reeves Gabrels walks the line between song structure and wiggy sonics like no one else.
His tunes on Rockonica have familiar verse/chorus construction (and are often maddeningly catchy), and his riffs and solos typically possess the contours that define classic rock.
That is not to say, however, that the music isn't original as it is blatantly Reeves' idiosyncratic songwriting and guitar stylings that drive these tracks and makes them stand out as something you may have heard before but have never experienced at the same time.
