Topic: Refilwe

In the News (Fri 17 Feb 12)

Star - Family pray for daughter ahead of heart operation
Refilwe was fortunate to be chosen as the first beneficiary of the Walter Sisulu Paediatric Trust Fund, which was set up at the Sunninghill Private Hospital in Sandton.
Refilwe, who had attended a church service before departing, said on admission to the hospital: "I am actually not nervous, just excited that I was granted the opportunity and that I have a new lease of life."
Refilwe's problems started as a 6-month-old when doctors diagnosed her as suffering from truncocis arteriosis, a rare and potentially fatal disorder.

At the Mercy of Drug Giants
Refilwe is a spectral figure, so thin that the light from the huge hospital window at her back seems to pass through her.
Refilwe, impossibly, gets to her feet and makes her way with pitiful steps and the arm of a nurse to the door, a walking wraith.
Refilwe, like the rest of the patients in wards 13 and 16, refuses to accept she has HIV.

Star - Heart surgery gives girl great start to the year
On Tuesday, Refilwe, the first recipient of the hospital's Walter Sisulu Paediatric Trust Fund, was wheeled into the operating theatre for a heart operation that cost about R120 000.
When Refilwe was six months old, it was discovered that her pulmonary artery and aorta were fused together - a rare and potentially fatal disorder.
Refilwe's parents were warned that she would need a replacement when she was older.

Stories and Storytelling in Phaswane Mpe
Refilwe's 'journey through this world' (2001: 119) leads her to recognise, finally, that she is no better or worse than anyone else, and that the labels we give to each other ('Hillbrowan', 'Alexandrian', 'Johannesburger', etc.) prevent us from acknowledging our common humanity (2001: 122).
Refilwe's own journey takes her (as Mpe's did) to Oxford to enrol at Oxford Brookes University and to read (like Mpe) for an MA in Publishing and Media Studies.
Secondly, through the story of Refilwe (and through her response to Refentse's short story), Mpe builds into his novel a statement about the power of works of fiction to influence and alter peoples lives - provided of course that the reader has (like Refilwe) the necessary openness and willingness to enter into the fictional world.
