Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek: Reflection Eternal: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
A theory as to why the snotty misfit kids-- the ones the once-glorious indie empire would have, not so many years ago, claimed as staunch subjects-- are now defecting for the surprising country of underground hip-hop: it's the directness, stupid.
Despite his occasional propensity for self-righteousness ("[I'm a] best-selling author writing great chapters in history"), Kweli is generally expressive and concerned, rather than hectoring and moralizing.
Which brings me to the music's current ascendancy among the weird-teen set: Reflection Eternal includes, among its other virtues, an open description of its self-perceived place in the world.

Kweli is a rare MC, as his lyricism resounds with a knowledge that transcends his still tender age.

It is impossible to avoid comparison between Talib Kweli's solo effort and that of Blackstar mate Mos Def, so let's get it out of the way early.
'Reflection Eternal' is not nearly as good as Mos Def's 'Black on Both Sides,' but it is far and away the best rap album of the year.
Kweli rhymes with a conscience, and avoids the hip-hop bravado and machismo that makes the style so repetitive and formulaic.
