Parabolic reflector - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
A parabolic reflector (also known as a parabolic dish or a parabolic mirror) is a reflective device formed in the shape of a paraboloid of revolution.
The parabolic reflector functions due to the geometric properties of the paraboloid shape: if the angle of incidence to the inner surface of the collector equals the angle of reflection, then any incoming ray that is parallel to the axis of the dish will be reflected to a central point, or "focus".
The most common applications of the parabolic reflector are in satellite dishes, telescopes (including radio telescopes), parabolic microphones and many lighting devices such as spotlights, car headlights and LED housings.

REFLECTOR   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Mission Objectives: The REFLECTOR microsatellite is a passive reflective spatial reference test object consisting of separate prism retroreflectors placed in reference points (nodes).
It will be used for retroreflection of laser radiation coming from a ground-based laser radar to analyze and investigate the return signal structure for determination of spatial (angular) resolution, testing, and identification of spacecraft which may be defined as space debris.
To make REFLECTOR more useful to the general laser ranging and remote sensing community, the group of retros at the mid-section of the vehicle were modified to cause a polarization change to the reflected light.

Since the reflector is parabolic in the horizontal plane, the energy is focused into a narrow beam.
Since the reflector is narrow in the horizontal plane and wide in the vertical plane, it produces a beam that is wide in the horizontal plane and narrow in the vertical plane.
The cylindrical paraboloid reflector is fed either by a linear array of dipoles, a slit in the side of a waveguide, or by a thin waveguide radiator.

A reflector is a Linux computer that is not connected to any radio but rather sits on lots of internet bandwidth capable of allowing many repeaters to be inter-connected together by streaming the received audio back to all other connected stations.
The reflector control ops may try to contact a local control op on the air to advise the problem, however this may not always be possible.
By default, connections to the reflectors now time out with no activity however many node owners set this period for a long period so it is not unusual for repeaters with minimal traffic to stay connected to the Reflector for extended periods of time.

 Telescopes
In both the reflector and refractor telescopes, the focus is before the eyepiece, so the image in astronomical telescopes is upside down.
Many reflector telescope use another light path design called the cassegrain design to reflect the light back through a hole in the primary mirror, so that detectors or the eyepiece can be conveniently placed behind the telescope.
The images in reflector telescopes do not have holes or shadows in them because the light rays from the unblocked parts of the primary mirror are all added together when they are focussed together.

A parabolic reflector or parabolic dish is a reflective device formed in the shape of a paraboloid of revolution.
Because many types of energy can be reflected in this way, parabolic reflectors can be used to collect and concentrate energy entering entering the relector at a particular angle.
The most common applications of the parabolic reflector are in satellite dishes, telescopes (including radio telescopes), parabolic microphones and many lighting devices such as spotlight and LED housings.

In 2001, attracting media attention as the first Chinese punk band to tour America, Reflector performed at Washington State University and performed in seven cities on the west coast – the highlight of which as a opening gig with Anti-Flag in Sacramento.
Sadly, Guo then left the band in early 2002, and it took the band another 5 months to record their first EP Reflector, which was released by Japanese record label People’s Records in July of 2002.
Reflector continues to play gigs all over Beijing and China, and has played over 300 shows, including the Live Vocals festival, organized by Cui Jian (August 2003) and the 2003 Midi Music Festival (October 2003).

 1995 Radar Reflector Test
Most radar reflectors are variations on the 3-sided corner reflector, also known as a corner cube or a trihedral reflector.
As the trihedral reflector is rotated off this axis in any direction, the echo becomes weaker, and drops by half (-3 dB) at an angle of 12° to 20° from the axis of symmetry, depending on its specific shape (see fig.
The classic octahedral reflector is made of three planar circles or squares of metal intersecting at right angles, forming eight trihedral reflectors.

 Reflector Lamps
The two primary incandescent reflector lamps models are the "PAR" or sometimes called parabolic reflector lamps for outdoor usage, and the "R" used primarily in indoor applications.
The Majority of the incandescent reflector PAR and R lamps provide a dust free reflecting surface inside the lamp to direct the light without the use of any particular fixture.
Reflector lamps offer increased efficiency in some applications over general service lamps because light is concentrated over a small area.

 All-Sky Reflector
To minimize radial compression of the subject toward the edge of the field (as occurs with fisheye lenses and spherical reflectors) a prolate ellipsoidal, parabolic or hyperbolic reflector is required.
The reflector can be spherical (though a parabolic one would still be preferred) because the radial image compression of a spherical reflector is not too serious for an angular coverage of 180 degrees or less.
For high resolution and contrast, the reflector should have a smooth, consistent, and highly reflective surface (second surface reflectors are generally not acceptable because they are likely to produce double images).
