	Refugio, Texas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Refugio, the county seat of Refugio County, is on the north bank of the Mission River at the intersection of U.S. highways 183 and 77 and State Highway 202.
		Without a railroad Refugio had difficulty competing with other towns in the region, however, and shrank during the 1890s; its estimated population dropped to 800 by 1892 and to 600 by 1896; in 1900 there were 699 people living there.
		The discovery of oil in Refugio County in 1928 led to a population boom in the city and rapid development.

		Refugio County (O-18) is on the lower Gulf Coast in the Coastal Prairies region, bounded on the south by San Patricio County, on the west by Bee and Goliad counties, on the north by Victoria and Calhoun counties, and on the east by Aransas County and by Hynes and Copano bays.
		Refugio County is joined to the rest of Texas by U.S. Highway 77, which runs southwesterly across the western part of the county, and by State Highway 35, which runs north to south across the eastern section of the area.
		Refugio County lost much of its coastland during the 1870s when the county was divided after a political dispute between coastal and inland residents.
