Reg Empey - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Empey became increasingly prominent in the UUP and was often a member of its negotiating teams throughout the 1990s, the decade when he first became a party officer, and he became a key ally of David Trimble, who became leader of the party in 1995.
In 1999, Reg Empey was knighted by the Queen.
Empey stood in the contest to succeed him and on June 24, 2005, was elected.

Despite all that, however, the election of Reg Empey to succeed David Trimble at the helm of the party should not be dismissed as a trifling matter.
Empey is almost universally acknowledged to be an affable and courteous man. That alone marks a stark contrast with Trimble, who was notoriously irascible.
Empey may be the man to finally restore some calm.

Everything Ulster - Empey To Confront Unionist History
The one thing I can say for Reg Empey following the controversial decision to bring a representative of a paramilitary group under his party's umbrella group at the assembly is that it's a brave step.
Empey has claimed that the move was, as well as a tactical decision to get the extra executive seat, part of a strategy to bring loyalists in from the cold and work to reduce the feeling of alienation from the political process felt by many in loyalist communities.
I could go down the line of accusing Reg and the UUP of utter hypocrisy, given their past rhetoric on decommisioning of IRA weapons, however this is rhetoric not confined to the UUP, it has been a common tactic of all shades of Unionism since the early days of the peace process.
