Their popularity there was greatly assisted by the fact that the group was enthusiastically supported by Australia's only non-commercial rock radio station, Double Jay in Sydney, which in turn led to early exposure for their music videos on the popular national pop show Countdown.
In October 1979, the group released their second album Regatta de Blanc, which was a major seller in many countries and which spawned the singles "Message In a Bottle", "Walking on the Moon", and "The Bed's Too Big Without You".
In March 1980, the Police decided to embark on their first world tour, and they were one of the first major rock bands to play in places like Bombay, India and Egypt.

Bombs Away is another amusing Copeland number, one that manages to make generals and other military people look and sound goofy, and in the process sound both timely and timeless (thanks to the fact that, as of this writing, bombs in Afghanistan aren't that far in the past).
De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da is sometimes slammed because of its "stupid" title, but heck, a great lightweight pop number isn't any worse than a great "serious" pop number, and the whole thing is so catchy it's scary.
Hungry For You (J'Aurais Toujours Faim De Toi) doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is - a REALLY energetic groove with Sting trying to sing in French and failing in an incredibly entertaining way while the rest of the band does their stuff as well as ever.

And right from the start, the Police had worked out sudden tempo and time changes that left most rock bands -- dinosaurs to New Wavers -- in the dust: "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" is the best-known example.
They broke up at the height of their popularity after 1983's Synchronicity, and songwriter/lead singer Sting went on to respectable solo success, despite (or maybe because of) losing his earlier edge and going with Adult Contemporary production values.
