  Susannah Carleton - The Regency
Strictly speaking, the period of British history known as the Regency began in 1811, when King George III was declared irrevocably insane and his oldest son, George, the Prince of Wales, became the Prince Regent, and ruled the country in his father's stead.
Traditional Regencies frequently have real people as characters: Beau Brummell, Prinny, the patronesses of Almack's, etc. In other words, traditional Regencies capture the elegance and the "glitter" of the era; historicals are more likely to deal with social ills or the more "gritty" aspects of life.
In the case of romances, that recipe is boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, boy and girl overcome obstacles, boy and girl marry and live happily ever after.

Regency romance - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Regency romances are a subgenre of romance novels set during the period of the English Regency or early 19th century.
Rather than simply being versions of contemporary romance stories transported to a historical setting, Regency romances are a distinct genre with their own plot and stylistic conventions that derive from the works of Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer, and from the fiction genre known as the novel of manners.
The readership waned during the early 2000's along with the popularity of other historical romances in favor of contemporary settings, and was also hurt by changes in distributors and retailers.

Maureen Mackey — fiction writer, business partner
A Regency romance is a romance set in early 19th century England, and usually focuses on characters who are titled or at least living among the aristocracy of that period.
However, in a Regency, as in all romances, it's the developing love relationship between the hero and the heroine that takes center stage.
There are the "traditional" regencies, shorter books in which great attention is paid to historical accuracy, and even the nuances of Regency slang and expressions.

All About Romance: Karen Harbaugh on Regency Romance
We asked Regency author Karen Harbaugh for a simple definition of a Regency romance, as opposed to a romance set in the Regency era.
Strictly speaking, the Regency lasted from 1811 to 1820 in England, when the Prince of Wales took over for his father who was becoming insane.
Anyway, in Regencies, for example, once the couple is engaged, you can't have the man back out of it--he'd be considered a cad, and the woman's reputation would be put into question.

Regency novels should be set during this period, although certain Regency themes such as the Napoleonic War allow Regency novels to be set back as far as 1800.
Regency readers are very savvy and know right away when someone has made a faux pas in a novel.

A Regency romance is a story of love between a hero and heroine who lived during the period that the Prince of Wales (later George IV) ruled for his father George III, who suffered with the disease porphyria.
The Regency was a brief period--1811-1820--and sometimes Regency novels are set outside these narrow boundaries.
In architectural and design terms, the 'Regency' style is considered to have reigned between 1800 and 1837 thus causing considerable confusion about the time period.

Romance anthologies allow readers to sample writers new to them, or writers they've lost track of, and this holiday batch is particularly lively and varied.
This year Signet's Regency anthology is genuinely worth the cover price, despite the absence of stars from previous years such as Mary Balogh - but it does have Carla Kelly, and the Edith Layton's not bad either this time.
All are beautifully written, as would be expected from five of the most experienced Regency writers around, and the feel-good factor is as plentiful as the holly and mistletoe.

 CatherinePalmer.com - Regency Romance
The “Regency” lasted from 1811-1820, a mere nine years, before George III passed away and the Regent, George IV, took his place on the throne.
Those pesky Americans began the War of 1812 against England and Canada, machinery-smashing Luddites incited riots across the countryside, Louis XVIII attempted to claim the French throne, British forces burned down the White House (sorry, but it’s true), and Napoleon was exiled, then he escaped, and finally he was defeated at the Battle of Waterloo.
Miss Austen’s characters all are blissfully unaware of everything of political and historical import during the Regency — except that British officers in their red coats are “fearful handsome.” Jane Austen writes of teatime, strolls in the countryside, and loving families.

After that, it went through two more revisions: one to beef it up from a Regency to historical-length (I aimed at Brava, so not only was it longer, but it was spicier), the other to bring it back down as a Regency when I got the call from my editor to buy the shorter version.

What is a Regency? by Allison Lane and Elisabeth Fairchild   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The Regency was a brief period of English history that was characterized by elegance and upheaval.
Named for the Prince Regent, who ruled the country from 1811-1820 after his father, George III, went insane, the era saw much political, social, and military change, including the beginnings of the industrial revolution, agricultural reform, the movement of population from country to city, and the birth-pangs of a social conscience and women’s rights.
Bright, witty, light-hearted, and usually chaste, Regency Romances are comedies of manners and mores that capture the glitter and elegance of a fleeting but romantic moment in history.
