  The Joseph Regenstein Library
The Joseph Regenstein Library houses the Business, Divinity, Humanities, and Social Sciences collections and the Special Collections Research Center.
Reference materials for disciplines in the humanities and social sciences are located in the Library's reading rooms on the 1st-5th floors.
The majority of the Library's current periodicals are shelved in the Periodicals Reading Room, located on the east side of the second floor.

The library helped YBP to test and develop the new system, which in turn helped the library to achieve its goal of reducing the time needed to put books onto shelves.
The library's major goal from the beginning, according to Scott Perry, Assistant Head of Acquisitions at Regenstein, was speed, finding ways to keep the books moving from receipt to shelf.

The Library Planning Group was convened in June 2005 to evaluate and forecast the strategic ways in which library services, collections and facilities will need to be transformed to meet the academic and information needs of the College during the next half-century.
While these projects reflect the growing importance of the library as a space to foster, support, and accommodate intellectual activities, it is not clear how explicitly they respond to the unique nature of liberal arts teaching and learning or the changing modes of how students learn and use information.

Duane Webster, executive director of the Association of Research Libraries, says that many university libraries would love to keep their books in a single central facility, but lack either the funds to do so or the space on central campus.
In fact, the library plans are expected to be so popular with researchers that the university sees the library as a recruiting tool for people who will want to work at Chicago or just do research here.
The ability to browse is what makes libraries such exciting places, and it is nice to know that someone somewhere understands how important serendipity is to the life of the mind.

It is the library's good fortune that for the past twelve years, the purchasing and cataloging of materials, and the transition to a computerized catalog have been overseen by members who are professional librarians volunteering their time and expertise.
While the library supply expenses are provided for in the congregation's budget, all acquisitions for books, videos, CD-ROMs, and recordings are acquired through monetary donations to the Robert N. Glass Memorial Library Fund.
The Gottesman Library of Yeshiva University in New York, using VTLS, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (combined catalog for all their campuses), using VTLS, and Ostrow Library of University of Judaism in Los Angeles, using Innopac are other libraries that have Hebrew search ability.

The Wiggin Library has been at the heart of the school since its beginning when Frederic Huidekoper, son of the founder and the School's first professor and librarian, put his personal library at the disposal of the fledgling institution.
In addition to the many materials in Unitarian and Universalist history and theology, the library is also strong in related areas of literature, philosophy, and nineteenth-century American culture and thought as well as in the fields of comparative religion and social ethics.
Full library privileges at the University of Chciago libraries are open only to students taking a course at the University, although (limited) access to the libraries is permitted for Meadville Lombard students.

The 40,000-square-foot addition to the library, which was built on the former site of the university's football stadium, will hold about 8 million of the university's collection of 11 million volumes.
The planned expansion - slated for completion in 2009 - comes as university libraries across the country are grappling with the changing research habits of students and faculty, driven by online catalogs, digitized journals and even electronic versions of books.
Neil Harris, a U. of C. historian and member of the faculty committee planning the expansion, said it is imperative to maintain space for the university's massive and growing stacks even as research habits are changing.

The University closed the Regenstein Library’s fifth floor offices and book sorting facilities on Thursday afternoon due to fears that a shipment of books sent by the Library of Congress from New Delhi, India, through the Brentwood mail facility in Washington, D.C. had been exposed to anthrax.
Early last week, the Library of Congress called Nye to alert him to the possibility that these parcels passed through the Brentwood facility at the time of Senator Tom Daschle’s anthrax-contaminated letter.
“Since the library receives a very large number of letters and packages from many parts of the world and the incoming mail is distributed from the library receiving areas to most areas of the library buildings, continued vigilance is warranted,” Runkle stated in an e-mail to the library staff.

The new outlets in the Regenstein are wonderful, but a number of patrons, including myself, have noticed that the new outlets (particularly on the 4th floor) do not seem to be working...
University Facilities and Library Building Services are aware of this situation, and expect to have enough circuits in place to "turn on" all the power outlets on floors 4 and 5 by the end of 7th week (Feb. 16 - 19).
My job is to be here doing my studying and research; it is not to teach proper library behavior to half the student body, to disrupt my reading every 10-15 minutes to ask them if they couldn't please move their cellphone conversation downstairs.

The D'Angelo Law Library 's collection consists of over 700,000 volumes in print and other formats, including the primary laws of the United States and all fifty states, foreign, comparative and international law, legal commentary on a variety of topics, and resources in other disciplines of interest to legal researchers.
The Library has a limited number of assigned carrels on the third through sixth floors for use of students working on law journals, faculty research assistants, law students in seminar courses, and others with special research needs.

 Reginstein Construction Project: UChicago Facilities Services
The Regenstein Library Shelving Addition is planned as an automated storage and retrieval (ASR) shelving facility located to the immediate west of the Regenstein Library along Ellis Avenue.
The facility will increase the Library’s overall shelving capacity by approximately 3.5 million volumes and provide shelf space for approximately 22 years of new print acquisitions.
The addition will also contain consultation space for users of the collections and the Library’s preservation facilities.

A few months ago I had an opportunity to visit the Ludwig Rosenberger Collection of Judaica that is in the Regenstein Library of the University of Chicago.
This library is in the guides to Jewish Chicago published the JUF and Chicago Jewish News, but because it is a closed collection and part of the University of Chicago most members of the community probably know nothing about the collection.
In 1976 Regenstein Library mounted a special exhibit and published a guide to the exhibit.
