REGGIE WORKMAN: I think we have an idea of what is in store for us in life and what you can achieve and what you want to do.
REGGIE WORKMAN: Looking back on that situation, I realized that while a lot of people were spending time developing and honing their skills for composing and developing a band, I was busy helping somebody else with their program as being a supporting artist.
REGGIE WORKMAN: There may be only a few people who appreciate it, but I would rather be in the company of those few than the many who don't know what they are listening to or what you are trying to say.

Reggie Workman : Synthesis - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
The recordings on Synthesis were a live date in 1986 where Workman was performing with reedman Oliver Lake, pianist Marilyn Crispell, and drummer Andrew Cyrille.
At this time, Crispell was still very much a part of the Anthony Braxton Quartet, and her playing here reveals that influence: many of her solos incorporate long phrases from his compositions.
Perhaps it was a bad night, perhaps there was something wrong with the acoustics in the room, but as Crispell opens her heart into the mix where it is greeted warmly by Lake and Cyrille, Workman is dragging, playing through cues and line changes we have heard from him many, many times before.

The harp, piano and Workman's bowed bass conspire in the creation of an idiosyncratic tapestry of sound and silence, light and dark.
When, after introducing the theme, Workman leaves aside his bow to pluck out a buoyant bass pattern, Panzer's harp weighs in with biting, guitarlike interjections.
Throughout, it is Workman's bass that sets the pace, sketching out the compositions' frameworks and then allowing his partners to fill in the blanks.

Guardian Unlimited Arts | | Oliver Lake/Reggie Workman/Andrew Cyrille, Time Being
Oliver Lake is a founding member of the celebrated World Saxophone Quartet, bassist Reggie Workman a former John Coltrane partner, and Andrew Cyrille one of the few drummers able to sustain a long-term relationship with piano hurricane Cecil Taylor.
But if Lake's alto and sopranino saxes are hurtling into deep space, and Workman and Cyrille maintain a flexible pulse by the most convoluted means, the music is none the less full of engaging vamps, hooks and anthem-like melodies, and is recorded with such clarity that the most fleeting detail gains weight.
There's an unexpected playfulness to Lope, a folk-dance urgency turning into stop-time improv and then fast blowing against Workman's dark strummings on Given, and dazzling contrapuntal improv from all three on Special People.
