  Savoia-Marchetti SM.79 - Italy
In spite of its cumbersome appearance and outdated steel tube/wood/fabric construction, the S.M.79 was a rugged, reliable multi-role medium bomber which did quite a bit of damage in the face of heavy opposition.
In October 1939 the Regia Aeronautica began to receive the 79-II with 745.2 kW (1,000 hp) Piaggio P.XI RC.40 engines (one batch had the Fiat A.80 of similar power) and this was the dominant version in action subsequently.
About 1,200 served with the Regia Aeronautica including a handful of the III sub-type with forward-firing 20 mm cannon and no ventral gondola.

It was thus no less surprising that the aircraft was rejected by the Regia Aeronautica, on the basis that the internal wing fuel tanks were too vulnerable and were not of the self-sealing type.
Turning to the operational service of the RE 2000 with the Regia Aeronautica, it is worth remembering that only in 1941 it was decided to organize a unit to test operationally the plane.
As a further proof of its capabilities, the Regia Marina (Italian Royal Navy), having the need of replacing the old Ro 43 biplane as a ship-board catapult fighter, and after examining several options, selected the RE 2000, which was developed in a special version to be launched by catapult.

STORMO! The Regia Aeronautica in A.O.I. 1939/41 by Giulio Gobbi
At the beginning of WWII the situation of the Regia Aeronautica in AOI was far from adequate, with but a single Stormo assigned to the area.
This situation was recognized at the higher levels of the Regia Aeronautica and a program was initiated in 1939 to reinforce these units both quantitatively and qualitatively as follows:
The RAF with its Blenheims and Hurricanes had a modern qualitative superiority over the Regia Aeronautica types together with the advantage of being able to supply these planes with fuel and replacement parts from the motherland, this being most difficult for the Regia Aeronautica.

This title is really unusual and specific, dealing with a subject in which research have had the most important aspect: the flying helmets used by Italian pilots and radio operators during the period 1939-1945.
The Regia Aeronautica neved had a catalougue specific for dressing equipment, therefore the work of the author have been without any doubt admirable and important because have have filled that gap where till now very few things or nothing were known.

Italian Royal Navy in World War Two: naval air force   (Site not responding. Last check: )
As already seen, the Regia Marina began the conflict without carriers, founding itself in a position of inferiority regarding the Mediterranean English Fleet; this position of disadvantage could have compensated, at least in part, with the collaboration of a very developed and efficient naval Air force.
During the war was decided to replace the old Ro 43 with more modern and better armed aircraft, and they were constructed and experimented with satisfactory result, but the replacing was too much late for being of some usefulness before the armistice.
This does not mean that the Italian Air Force (Regia Aeronautica) and the Luftwaffe did not take care of the war on the sea, but nearly always they lead an independent war from that of respective Navy, with the consequence that a lack of cooperation made more difficult to reach the hoped result.
