In 1932 werd deze marsorder bij Koninklijk Besluit bekrachtigd en was het KNIL een feit.
Van Heutsz is op 25 april 1945 omgekomen in het Zuid-Duitse Planegg in de buurt van München.
Hij ligt op het Waldfriedhof in München begraven
Hij maakte vanaf 1870 carrière in het Nederlandse leger en was vanaf 1873 actief in Nederlands-Indië.

Deze overname van tradities was mogelijk doordat bij de reorganisatie van veel vredesopleidingen in 1965 het instructiebataljon van Heutsz uit Schoonhoven, in Coevorden welbekend door de deelname aan en de verzorging van de Van Heutsz-wandelmarsen, werd opgeheven.
