Regiment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The historical strength of the regimental system is the fierce loyalty engendered by this administrative regiment.
The regimental sergeant major is another key figure, responsible to the CO for unit discipline and the behaviour of the NCOs.
The regimental system is generally admired for the esprit de corps it engenders in its units' members, but efforts to implement it in countries with a previously-existing continental system usually do not succeed.

The Regimental School System and Education in the British Army
Regimental and Garrison schools had been in existence since the mid-seventeenth century, although it was the dawn of the nineteenth century which would see education opened up to significant numbers and on an official footing to both soldiers and their children.
To understand the background to the Regimental School system, it is necessary to outline the development of education in a military context on all levels in Britain before the Napoleonic Wars.
By the latter half of the eighteenth century, Regimental and Garrison schools funded by officers for the education of soldiers and their children were frequent, though highly variable in scope and system.

Regiment - www.canadiansoldiers.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The "regimental system" dates back to the British Cardwell Reforms, which structured British infantry units such that several battalions of men having the same regimental identity were created, with some tasked for overseas deployment and others remaining in the United Kingdom training.
Within the regimental system, soldiers, and usually officers, are usually posted to a tactical unit of their own regiment whenever posted to field duty.
The last vestiges of the old regimental system were swept away when the numbers of the regiments were deleted (Canada would not do this until 1920).

 The Regimental System
The regimental system is a mutually supportive personnel management structure that emphasizes a sense of belonging (in our collective military experience, to a military unit structure) (iv).
The Regimental System is commonly considered to have reached its evolutionary pinnacle in Britain during the Victorian era.
The regimental system, in its earlier guises, never had the welfare of the men at heart, It was centred on the preferences and ethics of the Colonel, the officers he permitted to purchase into his regiment, and the social life in which they partook.

 AMEDD Regiment
The U.S. Army Regimental System was established in 1981 to provide each soldier with a continuous identification with a single regiment.
The purpose of the system is to establish a method that would "enhance combat effectiveness through a framework that provides the opportunity for affiliation, develops loyalty and commitment, fosters an extended sense of belonging, improves unit esprit, and institutionalizes the war fighting ethos".
The intent and spirit of the Regimental System is to provide soldiers with the opportunity for affiliation with a particular unit.

This system was capitalized and expanded in the mid-1800s by the German general staff into an army that could rapidly transition from peace to war.
In sum, all three military personnel systems provided for units that were generally effective in combat, although the British weakness in operating with other battalions because of the lack of "trust" from one regiment to another hampered the army's combined-arms capability.
However, the German system, open to a larger population, was more adaptive to combined arms and engendered a "trust" across the entire army that made it the most effective system for creating and sustaining military combat units.

Parent regiment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In this system, adopted in 1957 under the Combat Arms Regimental System, or CARS, regiments are simply there to preserve units' lineage, and few regiments actually are complete organizations.
The few remaining complete regiments, which actually retain the designation "regiment", are the Armored Cavalry Regiments, the 3d Infantry Regiment, and the 75th Ranger Regiment.
Before then, it used the traditional regimental system, where regiments were actual combat units.

The "regimental system[s]" adopted by the Army are really a pale imitation of what they should be, because soldiers and officers can still spend their careers in different units.
If the US Army were to convert to a truly British style regimental system, with regional recruiting and careers spent in the same bn./rgt., the combination of America's high quality personnel and the unit cohesion that would result would even further improve the fine instrument of war that it is today.

The goal of the U.S. Army Regimental System (USARS) is to provide soldiers with a personnel system that foster unit readiness and combat effectiveness by developing in soldiers a sense of loyalty and commitment which comes from long-term identification with a unit.
From the organization of the North, South and East Regiment in 1636 until 1959, the regiment was the primary tactical unit in the National Guard.
Their study, completed in 1980, was the first step toward creation of the new manning system initiated in 1985 and embodied in Army Regulation 600-82, The U.S. Army Regimental System.

As the regiment had been the traditional principal repository of unit history in the Army a plan was devised to retain the regiments as permanent repositories of unit lineages, honors, and histories regardless of future tactical reorganizations.

The Army Medical Department 1775-1818: Evolution of the Continental Army Medical Department
Regimental surgeons assumed that they had a right to draw on the general hospital's stores and blamed hospital surgeons for the shortages which they experienced, but Morgan maintained that he had no orders to supply regimental needs.
Regimental surgeons also were required to submit returns on the number of sick under their care to the Hospital Department.
Although the legislation of April 1777 ended the regimental medical system as a separate entity, the enmity between regimental and hospital surgeons also continued to plague the department for a time and their "continual jealousies and altercations" in January 1778 "had a very pernicious influence," in Washington's opinion.

 USAREUR Units - Combat Divisions
Also decided at this time was the adoption of a new regimental system (ARS) in which each armor, air defense artillery, cavary, field artillery, and infantry regiment was assigned a home base from which regimental elements would rotate between continental and overseas assignments.
By necessity the new system broke traditional regimental associations with divisions since fewer regiments could be accommodated in the system because of the linking of elements between overseas and continental stations.
By 1985 implementation of the regimental system was separated from force modernization because of production delays, and unit rotation was abandoned because of personnel turbulence and its adverse effect on readiness.
