Regina is the commercial centre of southern Saskatchewan and a cultural metropole for both southern Saskatchewan and adjacent areas in the neighbouring American states of North Dakota and Montana.
Regina was incorporated as a city on June 19, 1903 and was proclaimed the capital of the province of Saskatchewan on May 23, 1906 by the first provincial government, led by Premier Walter Scott.
Regina's early history was of rapid growth which continued until the Great Depression began in 1929, at which point Saskatchewan had been the third province of Canada in both population and economic indicators.

Auto thefts are down by 44 per cent in Regina, a city that earlier in the decade had the dubious distinction of being Canada's car theft capital.
Police attribute that to the Regina Auto Theft Strategy, a policy the Saskatchewan government, the City of Regina and the Regina police department introduced four years ago.
Regina mayor, Pat Fiacco, said the 44 per cent drop is a welcome change.

An additional $147.7 million will be provided to Saskatchewan through the federal gas tax transfer and Saskatchewan communities are already receiving a full refund of their GST payments.
