 Opinion: Jim Riley
After all, at the time Regina was mired in the middle of the Western Hockey League standings and looked like it might well serve as mere cannon fodder, qualifying only because of the automatic entry the host city receives.
The Pats, originally named the Patricias when the team was formed in 1917, have won only three Memorial Cups in their long history and none since 1974.
Regina gets a chance to see how far it has come when the Pats play host to top-ranked Red Deer tonight at the Agridome - where the two teams could battle for the Memorial Cup in a few months.

Third Division was given the task of capturing the village of Courcelette, which the Germans had turned into the centre of an immensely strong fortified complex with four principal trench lines extending to a depth of more than two kilometres.
The plan was that the Patricias and the 42nd would begin the assault on 15 September by capturing the front line position the Germans called the Fabeck Graben (trench).
On 16 September, "C" Company and what was left of the Patricias attacked the trench in an assault that featured one of the great individual efforts of the war.

The situation on the ground in Afghanistan changed significantly during November and December 2001; consequently, Canada’s troop commitment was revised to a contingent of about 750 soldiers to deploy to Kandahar as part of a U.S. Army task force built around the 187th Brigade Combat Team.

In action, Canadian pipers were often employed in secondary duties as stretcher bearers, runners, ammunition and ration carriers and transport individuals.
The effect on the company was instantaneous and, inspired by his splendid example, they reformed and sprang at the wire with such fury and determination that they succeeded in cutting their way through and capturing the position which was known as "Regina Trench".
