By far and away the most interesting character described in the book, however, after Edward VII himself, is Reginald Brett, 2nd Viscount Esher, the most influential man in Edwardian Britain.
By now elevated to the peerage as Earl of Chatham and Viscount Pitt of Burton Pynsent, he lost all credibility as the "Great Commoner" and was unable to control the House of Commons as he once had.
He had not expected his ministry to be quite so stressful, and as a result of the relentless harrying he received from the Rockingham Whigs (including having his budget overturned!) he collapsed and spent the next eighteen months out of touch with politics (and, quite possibly, out of touch with reality).
