The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin was a British sitcom starring Leonard Rossiter in the title role.
The screenplay was adapted by David Nobbs from his own Reginald Perrin novels, though certain subplots in the novels were considered too dark for television and toned down or omitted from the TV series.
The first series was based on Nobbs' novel The Death of Reginald Perrin, which was re-titled The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin to tie in with the TV series and retains its new title to this day.

This innovative BBC sitcom, The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin, had as its central character a man falling headlong into the calamity of mid-life-crisis.
Inexplicably, the BBC made the series The Legacy of Reginald Perrin in 1996, continuing the story after Reggie had been killed by an advertising hoarding (Leonard Rossiter himself had passed away in 1984), leaving his former colleagues to perform absurd tasks in order to inherit several million pounds from his will.
The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin was comedy of the very highest order from a BBC at the pinnacle of its classic comedy output.

The remainder of the three series portray Perrin's efforts to escape from his middle-class existence, via some rather dubious disguises, opening an anti-corporate business called Grot - which is ironically a huge success, and finally through his commune for the disillusioned middle-classes.
Perrin is trying to reject his moribund, boring, consumerist lifestyle, but equally finds it nearly impossible to escape.
Perrin is an innovative and intelligent comedy which ranks alongside the classics of the genre.

BBC - Comedy Guide - The Fall And Rise Of Reginald Perrin
The Fall And Rise Of Reginald Perrin was quite unlike most other sitcoms: it employed a serial storyline and featured adult themes of disillusionment and loss, and a central character who was on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
In short, Perrin, at the age of 46, is questioning the meaning of life, and going through a real and quite terrifying mid-life crisis.
The Fall And Rise Of Reginald Perrin proved sufficiently popular for the BBC to recommission, and Nobbs once again wrote a novel, The Return Of Reginald Perrin (published 1977), which he then adapted for a second TV series.

What made the character of Reggie Perrin so successful was in part a result of Rossiter's complete mastery of physical comedy (in normal life he was a highly accomplished athlete), and the pliability of his face, whose expressions included every facial tic, grimace, and leer known to humanity.
"Reginald Perrin" is ideally viewed on video, in as much length as you can muster, infinitely preferable to the half-hour episode format it was originally shown in.

As manic-depressive dentist Ben Parkinson, Palmer provided extremely sturdy support to Craig herself, alternately bewildered at his wife's outbursts and endearingly patient and clumsy in his efforts to understand her frustrations--though he could also be stubborn, tactless and impervious to suggestion when he chose.

While it is easy to enter into retrospective criticism, David Nobbs would have done better than to succumb to temptation and revive the Reginald Perrin TV series.
Not only did The Legacy Of Reggie Perrin badly miss its leading light - Leonard Rossiter, alas, having died in 1984 - but it lacked all the qualities that so distinguished the three 1976-79 series, and most especially the first two of these.
True, every other actor returned to their posts (bar one, the Tony Webster character having been written out), all the old catchphrases were revived, and Gareth Gwenlan returned as producer, but scarcely a trace of the old sparkle remained.
