Reginald Tate ( December 13, 1896 – August 23, 1955) was a British actor, veteran of many roles in film and on television.
Tate was a regular actor on BBC Television almost from its very beginning, appearing in several 1930s productions, perhaps most notably starring as Stanhope in a 1937 version of the play Journey's End.

He was replaced at short notice by John Robinson, who was an experienced actor and veteran of many small and character parts in a variety of films and television programmes.
His performance is somewhat more detached and officious than Tate's, and he is generally regarded as the weakest of the four actors to have played the part on television.

On Saturday 2nd April 2005, BBC4 are broadcasting the BBC's first live drama in over 20 years, a two-hour remake of Nigel Kneale's cult science fiction series, The Quatermass Experiment.
The original series was broadcast over six weeks in 1953 and starred Reginald Tate.
The first two episodes were recorded for posterity, and are being released (in an apparantly co-incidental move) by BBC Worldwide along with the BBC sequels Quatermass II and Quatermass and the Pit on Monday 4th April.

For television, the character was first portrayed by Yorkshire born Reginald Tate, and Kneale regarded him as the definitive Quatermass, however, shortly before Quatermass II was due for filming, he died, and a replacement had to be found.
His place was taken by John Robinson, and despite being slightly younger than Tate, he was accepted in the role.
By the time of Quatermass and the Pit the BBC had invested more money on the production and one of the results was the use of a name actor - Andre Morell.

Similar territory was covered in the equally commanding Boyz N the Hood, but what makes this cautionary tale stand out is not only the Hughes brothers' forceful story, (written with their friend, Tyger Williams) and direction, but the naturalness of then-newcomer leads Turner as Caine, Larenz Tate as O-Dog, and Jada Pinkett as Ronnie.
Things start off violent, and never really stop, from beginning to end there is bloodshed, but theres alot more than just violence in this movie, Caine lives a day to day existence, and its only in the end that he realizes whats important to him- Ronnie (Jada Pinkett), her son, his family and living.
Other main character is Caines best friend 0-Dog (Larenz Tate) who is young, fl and doesnt [care], his presence in movie is really a powerful one, and his lack of conscience contrasts with Caines.

I have had the good fortune to seen Quatermass portrayed by four of those men: Brian Donlevy, Andre Morell, Andrew Keir, and John Mills.
The other two, Reginald Tate and John Robinson, played him in the first two BBC serials that are extremely hard to find or non-existent on video in the USA.
Each actor manages to bring out a slightly different side of the Professor, adding nuances to his character that make him all the more interesting.

Created by Nigel Kneale, Bernard Quatermass (played by Reginald Tate, John Robinson and Andre Morell respectively) is a rocket scientist who begins this cycle dreaming of putting men into space and ends fighting to prevent his work being co-opted by the military.
Originally broadcast live (only the first two episodes of The Quatermass Experiment survive), accents are plummy, scenery shakes and effects make Stingray look like The Matrix.
