SMS Frauenlob - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On 28 August 1914, shortly after the outbreak of WWI, Frauenlob saw her first action in the Battle of Heligoland, when the British Harwich forces with two light cruisers and 33 destroyers under Commodore Reginald Tyrwhitt raided deep into Heligoland Bight.
At about 8:00 am SMS Frauenlob and the light cruiser SMS Stettin spotted the British force and opened fire on Tyrwhitt's flagship HMS Arethusa, rendering her severely damaged and unable to continue the battle.
When Arethusa turned away, the German cruisers did not pursue her, which saved them from running into Vice Admiral Beatty's battlecruisers that were bearing down upon the battle site and soon afterwards sank the German light cruisers SMS Cöln, SMS Mainz and SMS Ariadne and the torpeoboat V 187.

The Harwich Force of two light cruisers, HMS ´´Arethusa´´ and HMS ´´Fearless´´, and 31 destroyers, under the command of Commodore Reginald Tyrwhitt, made a raid upon the German navy patrols west of the German naval base at Heligoland.
The Admiralty´s failure to inform Tyrwhitt and Keyes of this change in plans later caused considerable confusion on the battlefield.
Finding his force outgunned and under heavy fire, with ´´Arethusa´´ heavily damaged by ´´Frauenlob´´, Tyrwhitt received initial assistance from Commodore Goodenough´s squadron of six modern light cruisers of the Southampton-class: HMS ´´Southampton´´, HMS ´´Birmingham´´, HMS ´´Falmouth´´, HMS ´´Liverpool´´, HMS ´´Lowestoft´´ und HMS ´´Nottingham´´.

 Peaks of the Canadian Rockies
Mount Tyrwhitt occupies a very significant point on the Continental Divide in that it is from its summit that the BC/Alberta boundary leaves the Elk Range and descends into Elk Pass, following a generally ENE-WSW trend for fifteen kilometres until reaching the summit of Mount Joffre.
It is interesting to note that in 1914 one of the most highly respected of the early guides in the Canadian Rockies, Conrad Kain, was the first to climb Mount Tyrwhitt.
Although a camera station on the summit was not occupied until 1915, Alan Campbell led a reconnaissance survey to the Elk Pass area in June, 1914 and it must have been during this time that the mountain was first climbed.

However, the cautious German High Seas Fleet rarely sailed far from port.
Eager for a fight, two British commodores, Reginald Tyrwhitt and Roger Keyes, conceived a plan to bait the Germans into the open sea, where they would be vulnerable.
Under the plan, a small group of British ships would venture into the bight until spotted by German patrols and would then turn and flee out to sea, where a larger British force would be waiting.
