Rego Park is the center of immigrants from what is now Uzbekistan, a former Soviet Republic, and specifically from the areas of Bukhara,Samarkand, and Tashkent.
But Rego Park is also getting an influx of young American families, and young professionals who are sick of paying rents $3,000 a month for an apartment the size of a walk-in closet, or who are sick of paying rent at all, and want to own a co-op for less than $500,000.

 Discovering America in Queens
Queens remains a predominantly residential area where the identity of the neighbourhoods (they were once small towns) are much stronger that that of the borough as a whole.
But more often, “the choreography of Queens is one of chaotic, but polite cohabitation.” Those words are part of the introduction written by Warren Lehrer and Judith Sloan’s to their Crossing the BLVD—a collage of recent immigrants’ oral tales that convey many of the frustrations, yearnings, failures and successes of Queens’ immigrants.
Rego Park is a comfortable, mundane looking neighbourhood, with a large variety of housing - boxy six-story apartment houses, older one-family private houses with aluminium siding, and attached newer two and three family private homes - in a mixture of commonplace styles.

Because the perception of shoppers, when they see the parking area available to them largely filled with cars (presumably they are not going to see the parking area behind as they approach the store), is that the store is busy and their shopping trip will be protracted if they go there now.

Some relief from standards, such as lot coverage maximums and open space minimums, as well as parking ratios, might be sufficient to extract from developers concessions on the mix of retail uses and design in ordinary developments.

The land along Queens Blvd. between Elmhurst and Forest Hills was developed as Rego Park, its promoters deriving the name from "Real Good," as in Real Good Construction Company, the folks which put it on the map in the 1920s.
After construction of houses and apartments began, a chain reaction was created: a railroad station opened in 1928, the expressway was extended to Queens in 1935, and a subway line to Union Turnpike began service in 1936.
Today, Rego Park has a diverse mix of apartment buildings and private housing, including Lefrak City, a huge housing complex astride the Long Island Expressway that at first was predominantly Irish, German, and Italian.

Tech Support Forum - View Single Post - NYC vs Wal-Mart   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The New York Times is reporting Vornado Realty Trust ended negotiations with Wal-Mart for its Rego Park, Queens retail development after intense opposition grew from neighborhood, labor and environmental groups as well as small businesses to the proposed 132,000-square-foot store.
Melinda Katz, chairwoman of the Council's Land Use Committee, said a Vornado representative informed her yesterday that Vornado was no longer negotiating with Wal-Mart for it to be part of the mall planned for Rego Park, Queens, in 2008.
If Wal-Mart expects to locate in New York City, and eventually they will, despite the capacity for organized opposition in the city, they (and their developers) need to be forthcoming and cooperative with all the interest groups that will claim to have a stake in the outcome of the project.
