Topic: Rehabilitation Project Force

  RPF - A Sociological Study
The new Rehabilitation Project Force program was designed with multi-goals, though the basic one was providing a situation in which individuals who had been negligent in their posts could be isolated from the group (thus preventing further immediate harm).
As might be expected, the problems that landed one in the RPF on occasion continue to manifest in the life of a participant during their stay on the program.
RPF participants are organized into work teams, and such teams proceed to their assigned tasks (and partners proceed to their auditing) without immediate and constant outside supervision.

BRAINWASHING IN SCIENTOLOGY'S REHABILITATION PROJECT FORCE (RPF)
As the policy succinctly stated, "[a] member of the RPF is a member of the RPF and of nothing outside of it, till released" (Boards of Directors of the Churches of Scientology, 1977: 3).
Likewise, in an affadavit, Hana Whitfield swore that, while she was on the RPF in the Fort Harrison, Lyn Froyland was assigned to the RPF's RPF and "was chained to a pipe down there [in the basement] for weeks, under guard.
Pignotti reported the common refrain that her RPF cohort ate after the rest of the staff was finished, but the leftovers that they ate came from the kitchen and not items found on people's plates (Kent Interview with Pignotti, 1997: 14; see Kent Interview with Dale, 1997: 6).

Scientology controversy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
After CAN was forced into bankruptcy and taken over by Scientologists in the late 1990s, Scientology proudly proclaimed this as one of its greatest victories.
One alleged example of the Church's brainwashing tactics is the Rehabilitation Project Force, to which church staff are assigned to work off alleged wrongdoings under conditions that many critics characterize as degrading.
To understand the forces ranged against L. Ron Hubbard, in this war he never started, it is necessary to gain a cursory glimpse of the old and venerable science of psychiatry-which was actually none of the aforementioned.

 Scientology Rehabilitation Project Force (RPF)
The RPF, or "Rehabilitation Project Force" is often depicted by Scientology critics with such terms as "gulag", "concentration camps", or "slave labor".
While the RPF mostly consists of physical work and while contact with regular staff is limited, people in the RPF go through the program because of their belief in Scientology and because they believe that it will give them a chance to rehabilitate their purpose and motivation.
Finally, I web a very good analysis of critics' classical myths and hyperboles about the RPF - this analysis is done by Kymus, an ex-member who, like myself, opposes both the CoS and fanatical critics.

Brainwashing in Scientology's Rehabilitation Project Force (RPF)
Moreover, as RPF participants they spent countless (and in some cases, hundreds) of hours confessing to alleged sins and crimes, and they fear that the organization would use these confessions against them if they were to talk.
Others received RPF assignments for poor production on their jobs or posts, poor personality indicators (presumably such as depression, grumbling, and doubting Hubbard or his techniques), and obvious trouble making (Boards of Directors of the Churches of Scientology, 1977: 1).
When Nefertiti (which is the presumed former member's alias) found herself in the RPF's RPF in the same basement a decade or so later, she met a woman (she claims) who was "in her thirties, feverish, [her] entire body poured with sweat [and] was wearing chains.

The Watchman Expositor: Scientology's Concentration Camps
Respected sociologist, Stephen Kent, professor at the University of Alberta, recently presented a paper on the RPF at the academic Society for the Scientific Study of Religion.
There is even an RPF's RPF — a kind of second level RPF for people already in RPF thought to be deserving still greater punishment or "rehabilitation" than provided in the regular RPF.
Scientology officials have tried to escape the awful specter of this type of treatment at the RPF by comparing it, incredibly, to life in a monastery, or boot camp in the Marines, a time and place for complete concentration on implementing Scientology into one's life.

Indeed, few such reports have dealt with the Sea Organisation as a whole, and some have focused on one its sub-groups, the Rehabilitation Project Force, referred to within the Sea Organisation by its initials RPF.
The Church describes the RPF as a programme of redemption for members of the SO who have committed severe violations of its codes.
The RPF performs a specialised function within the SO, one that, according to the Church, is consistent with that employed by other religious communities to assist erring members of their core religious group to make amends for wrongdoing and return to the good graces of the religious order from whose tenets they had strayed.

The Rehabilitation Project Force represents "a second chance" for Sea Org staff "who would otherwise be subject to dismissal for serious and/or continuous ecclesiastical violations," according to the church.
After studying accounts of people who were in the Rehabilitation Project Force, Stephen Kent, a professor of sociology at the University of Alberta, concluded in 1997 that because it puts "coerced participants" through a regime of harsh physical punishment, hard labor, and forced self-confessions, it is a "brainwashing program."
It was difficult for Beatty to leave the Rehabilitation Project Force -- to "blow," as he calls it -- because every time he said he wanted to leave, he was talked or berated out of it.

The RPF is part of the "Sea Organization" (Also known as the "Sea Org") of the Scientology Organisation.
The Sea Org was created in 1967 and according to L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of the Scientology Organisation, it is the "sole guarantee of the survival of Scientology technology on this planet." Members of the Sea Org use pseudo-naval ranks and uniforms, and the unit is fully organised along military lines.
Accordingly the RPF created by Hubbard is essentially nothing more than an "education camp" of the kind employed by totalitarian regimes.

Brainwashing in Scientology's Rehabilitation Project Force (RPF)
This study examines the confinement programs and camps that Scientology operates as supposedly rehabilitative facilities for "deviant" members of its "elite" Sea Organization.
These programs, known collectively as the Rehabilitation Project Force (RPF), put coerced participants through regimes of harsh physical punishment, forced self-confessions, social isolation, hard labour, and intense doctrinal study, all as part of leadership-designed efforts to regain members' ideological commitment.
The confinement that participants experience, combined with forms of physical maltreatment, intensive ideological study, and forced confessions, allows social scientists to speak of the RPF as a "brainwashing" program.

Scientology and the European Human Rights Debate: A Reply to Leisa Goodman, J. Gordon Melton, and the European ...
The issue of authorship of the RPF documents is on some importance, especially since the ones that I have seen were approved by Hubbard but not necessarily written by him.
Persons leaving the RPF also were hit with what the organization calls a "freeloader debt" (often running into tens of thousands of dollars) for all of the free courses they had taken while active Sea Organization members (Hubbard 1976a: 225).
While the Scientology organization may insist that adults in the RPF program are there willingly, it is difficult to imagine this justification (or excuse) applying to teens whose presumed ages would suggest that they should be under the care of parents or guardians (Kent 2000: 43).

Exactly why Ken Hoden was placed on the punishment program is not known, but as the “base captain” an obvious candidate would be if he were assigned responsibility for one or both of the women who died at “Gold Base” in the Spring of 2000.
In addition, it appears that one or more of the plaintiffs or their agents in this case has engaged in extralegal criminal harassment against the debtor.
The circumstances of one young woman being sent into a hot transformer vault and another dying because of unlighted construction machines on a public road after dark would have (in my opinion) supported charges of “depraved indifference murder.”  No one was charged in the transformer vault death.
