Rehearsal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A rehearsal is a preparatory event in music and theatre (and in other contexts) that is performed before the official public performance, as a form of practice, and to ensure that all details of the performance are adequate for professional presentation.
The dress rehearsal is often the last rehearsal before the concert performance and falls at the end of technical week.
Prior to rehearsing a concerto with an orchestra, a soloist will often rehearse it with a pianist substituting for the entire orchestra (thus, two pianists in the case of piano concerti).

Rehearsal letter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A rehearsal letter is a boldface letter of the alphabet in an orchestral score, and its corresponding parts, that provides a convenient spot from which to resume rehearsal after a break.
Because rehearsal letters are independent of edition and in some cases even version, they are also useful for telling applicants for positions in the orchestra what passages they need to play at the audition.
Rehearsal letters might be used in chamber ensemble music, but they would have very little point in unaccompanied instrumental music (such as the solo piano repertoire), since the instrumentalist wouldn't need to communicate to a fellow player where to resume playing.

The rehearsal process typically begins with a talk in which the director presents her ideas to the cast and to the rest of the production team.
There are other, less conventional ways of beginning the rehearsal process—with a show-and-tell of art and artifacts from the period of the play, or with group improvisations based on key scenes, or with a field trip to a real-life setting suggested by the script, to give a few examples.
Rehearsing involves physical, emotional, and hearing memory in addition to rote memorization of lines, and the combination of these forces greatly aids an actor's ability to learn.

Buddhist Scriptures: First Rehearsal of the Tipitaka
The First Rehearsal is recorded to have taken place during the rainy season of the first year after the parinirvana, the latter event being the era from which the Buddhists have reckoned their chronology.
It is interesting that the account in the Vinaya records that at least one monk preferred to disregard the version of the Buddha's discourses collected at this rehearsal and remember his own, as he had received it from the Buddha.
If there were a number of monks in distant parts who missed the First Rehearsal it is likely enough that quite a number of discourses remembered by them and handed down to their pupils existed, which were missed at the Rehearsal though perfectly authentic.
