''The Rehearsal'' is a 1974 film produced by Jules Dassin that is a cinemagraphic indictment of the Greek junta of 1967-1974.
''The Rehearsal'' was a satirical play aimed specifically at John Dryden and generally at the sententious and overly ambitious theater of the Restoration tragedy.
In ''The Rehearsal,'' a director/author attempts to put on a new play, and he lectures his actors and critics with impossible and absurd instructions on the importance of what they are doing.

Fred Astaire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
His perfectionism was legendary as was his modesty and consideration towards his fellow artists; however, his relentless insistence on rehearsals and retakes was a burden to some.
After announcing his retirement with Blue Skies in 1946, Astaire soon returned to the big screen to replace the injured Gene Kelly in Easter Parade (1948) opposite Judy Garland, and for a final reunion with Rogers, The Barkleys of Broadway (1949).
Afterwards, Astaire announced that he was retiring from dancing in film to concentrate on dramatic acting, scoring rave reviews for the nuclear war drama On the Beach (1959).

Wilhelm Furtwangler, Genius Forged in the Cauldron of War, Classical Notes, Peter Gutmann
Furtwängler often spent entire rehearsals polishing crucial transitions, but not here; he chops the first movement into dozens of inconclusive fragments, deliberately wrenching the mood from lilting lyricism to raw savagery, the tempos from standstill to runaway, and dynamics from inaudible to heavily overloaded.
The movement ends in screaming trumpets, a primordial burst of sheer abject terror as both Bruckner and Furtwängler confronted the most horrifying fear of all: that at the very end of their struggles there would be only a void.
A further benefit of Celibidache's rehearsal mania was that by solving performance problems beforehand he was free to explore unconventional interpretations that enthralled audiences bored with safe and indifferent runthroughs of familiar repertoire.
