A Reichsgau was a province within the Greater Germany of 1938 to 1945 (from the start of territorial annexation to the fall of the Third Reich).
There were several Reichsgaue, namely the annexes of Austria, Sudetenland, Wartheland and Danzig-Westpreussen.
These regions were each governed by a NSDAP (more generally known as the Nazi Party) official, known as a Gauleiter or "region leader".

Reichsgau - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Reichsgau (plural Reichsgaue) was an administrative sub-division created in a number of the areas annexed to Nazi Germany between 1938 and 1945.
It should not be confused with the Gau, an administrative region of the NSDAP (Nazi Party).
In December of that year Belgium was sub-divided into the District of Brussels, covering the capital city (which remained under the direct authority of the German Reichskommissar), and two Reichsgaue.

They formed the middle level of the state administration of the Reich, were self-governing bodies, and are to be seen in the context of the reform of the Reich of 1933.
The governor at the head of a Reichsgau was the Gauleiter of the local party of the NSDAP.

To present Schirach's responsibilities for crimes committed within the Reichsgau Vienna, where Schirach was Gau Leader and Reich Governor from July, 1940, until the downfall, the general basic functions of these two offices must be held in mind.
This is an extract from the Party Manual of 1943 and therefore catches Schirach in midstream in his activities in the Reichsgau Vienna.
Because of his far-reaching responsibilities and authority in these positions, the prosecution contends that Schirach must be held guilty, specifically, of all the crimes of the Nazi conspirators in the Reichsgau.
